The family would have been better off had the emigrated to Paris

I know many Russian emigres fled to the Orient during the waning days of the Russian Revolution, but why would the Belinskys go to Shanghai? It wasn't as if they had connections in that town. Despite having to face the privations of World War II, they would have been better off in Paris, which was culturally similar to St. Petersburg and they could speak the language.

Probably simple logistics. If they left Russia from the Asian part, Shanghai (or Harbin) would have been a logical destination.
