What I got from that was that the film shows us how American consumerism is what really turns people into complete weirdos. Dave and his father are the only two characters I can immediately think of who don't buy in to the American chain restaurants and companies. For example, Dave is always getting these items from Taco Bell, McDonald's, etc., thrown at him, but never voluntarily going after them. He does, however, make a purchase at Arby's, but not because he wants it. Only because he needs change. His father twice questions the lingo associated with the chains (Big Gulp, Frostee). Since neither Dave nor his father indulge in the consumerism most characters in the film, and therefore most Americans, take in, they are free from the somatic pleasures that we face in everyday society, and they are the ones whose eyes are truly opened.
