He was taking about nic cage's specific life. Mchael Caine was trying to communicate that Nic had to toss things out from his depressing life, he had to toss out the bad things that were destroying him.

Pretty much agree with above. Nic needed to move on and take the new weather job. It's a movie about acceptance.
