I don't think so, I think 7/10 is a very fair if not slightly generous rating for a film that was funny in parts, but slow moving and... well... average

I thought this film was awful. If you said its good acting then you obviously had it on mute when Michael Caine was on screen. That was just painful.

Would have to agree. I gave it a whopping 9/10. Really enjoyed it. There's no words, just watch it.

Have to agree with the OP. I remember seeing the trailer for this back in '05 and thinking, "Christ, another awful Nic Cage movie." Then, for lack of better alternatives, I watched it on cable last night and . . . was amazed. Darkly funny, cleverly plotted, very well acted, and with some genuine life lessons/observations that are delivered without the usual Hollywood sledgehammer.

Yeah, it was slow-moving at times (more slow moving than intended by the scriptwriter, I mean) and Caine's accent was a bit distracting at times. But definitely not the disaster I was expecting. I gave it a 7/10, and after reading the pro TWM comments in this thread, I could even revise that upward to 8/10.

I literally just finished watching the DVD about 20 minutes ago. It is definitely underrated, in my opinion. But it's a quirky, unusual film and I can see why it did poorly at the box office and a lot of people didn't like it. Hell, it's a lot better than a lot of these big action flicks that have no originality, yet make tons of money at the box office. I was slightly suspicious of the film, since its release date was pushed. Usually, movies like that don't turn out to be that good, since it's often due to poor test screenings. But I really enjoyed this film. Nicolas Cage is a great actor, and this type of role was perfect for him.

Absolutely it's underrated. This movie was fantastic. Great writing, great directing, great acting. All together and very well done film. I'd give this film at least a 7.5 - 7.9 out of 10.

The story is blah because his life is blah. The pace of the movie, the monotony, is exactly what he experiences. It isn't interesting intentionally

this film is also underated because of this : it tackles an issue that is real in america today. the subject of the children of divorced parents. but what makes this unique is, that during the film , it is the viewpoint of the children that is told. for instance the scene in which "shelly" overhears something she really shouldn't between mommy and daddy,, that blew me away, i mean it was funny but,, and also the fighting scene where the kids can't get to sleep, it's about time hollywood took this direction with the film,

I like this movie , good direction and not to mention cinematography , really like the dark gray-ish color of cold Chicago .
Cage does a good job , not as good as in Adaptation but nonetheless , he's good in this , he plays awkward characters like Spritz way better than he does with action heroes.
and a great soundtrack , doesnt really sound like the stuff Zimmer usually does , but it's good.

I gave it 4/10. I found it boring, slow and mostly uninteresting with only a few laughs. Maybe its more relatable to some, I dunno.

Nic Cage seemed to be doing a poor man's version of his character from Adaptation (which btw is much better black comedy/'quirky' film with much better acting etc. etc.)

Next got a higher rating than this.....and that movie sucked beyong belief it was so very cliche...if thats how you spell it. Any ways this was such an intersting movie very comical.....I love narrated movies.

probably one of the most underated movies of the whole year in my opinion,, i think that alot of people didnt' like it because of the dark comedy,, which i liked very much.

It is so underrated, i echo ur words, great acting, great directing, and by the way anything that anyone thinks boring about this film was done on purpose. just give it another try.
