This movie is a rare masterpiece

How much influence did Verbinski or Conrad have over the actual story. This story is so unusual, the main character gets almost nothing he wants but continues to resolve and triumph is ways that may not send fireworks into the air but they are true and meaningful to the average person. Great and masterful writing, no taking the easy Hollywood way out.

With more and more superhero movies coming out it just makes me cling even harder to films of this type, with this one sitting on top of the heap as my example. When I try to explain my love for it though I'm met with "I've never heard of it." or from those who've seen it something about how depressing it is or they didn't like all the profanity. I think my love for it is perhaps largely similar to what fans of No Country for Old Men feel. That its haters are a bunch of whiners who were expecting The Family Man or 101 Dalmatians. If you really think about it though an argument could be made that this is an R-rated darker version of The Santa Clause so what's the big scandal?!

But yeah it's fun to think about those I tell about The Weather Man sitting down watching it and what a weirdo they believe I am as the camel toe montage occurs and then total creep as the inner monologue occurs en route to tartar sauce. Good God I just realized how amazing it would have been to have had my freshman year English teacher 2 years later, she perhaps could have used that scene as one of her examples in addition to or rather than the scene in Austin Powers that she cited. She was quite a bit more insightful (and/or younger) than my other educators and probably would have had the balls to actually bring it up to a bunch of 14 and 15 year olds!

I only saw Austin Powers once, what is the scene and example she cited?

Ephemeron.

I think it's somewhere between being defrosted and that epic long piss. I can't find the clip though.

With a little bit of tweaking, this could've been on par with American Beauty (one of my favorite movies of all time). With that said I still rated it an 8/10. It's WAY better than the 6.5 IMDB has it pegged as. I don't know what it is about movies where the main character's life gets shit on, but I seem to like them quite a little bit.
