What was the deal with the coffee?

If it wasn't for the kids buying this movie for me for Christmas, I would have never even watched it.
BUT, what was the deal with the coffee, it didn't even seem to make sense? Was it because the story was that weak that they needed the filler to get it to a watchable point? Was it because it was so poorly written that they didn't expect the 10 years who would watch it to have a problem with it? Did they get a payment from some coffee company to do product placement? (Maybe, but I would not think a coffee company would want to be associated with this piece of junk)

Anyone, anyone?...Input is appreciated.

That whole little subplot of Phil's growing addiction to coffee was the weakest part of the film.

Yeah, at first it was kind of funny but then it gave me an odd feeling. Something seemed off about it being in this kind of movie. It seemed like it belonged in a darker kind of comedy (though I'll admit the blood-covered uniform thing seemed fine for some reason).

What was the deal with anything in this movie .... this really was a BAD BAD film ... the jokes were really bad, the script was bad, the acting was bad - and so was the coffee ... I am actually astonished at the ratings at over 5 - I was expecting a 2.

ah, the movie wasn't that bad. Him getting addicted to the coffee was funny. The director was trying to parallel the typical from zero to bigshot story with addiction and what not. I mean, it was funny, if i had to pic the weakest part of the movie I'd pinpoint the whole lack of a real conclusion with Big Willy and his Dad. At least Mike Ditka has found a new career.

well the coffee withdrawl when he couldnt get it that day is supposed to be the start of him being an *beep* i guess...

At the beginning of the movie, Phil is very non-emotional. The coffee addiction makes him like a new person who is full of many emotions, although mainly he just turns into a crazy caffeine addicted freak. I thought it was hilarious - in fact, I'm watching it right now!

I'm angry. I am spitting angry. I am like a tornado of anger swirling about.

I thought the coffee was a device to help in the transformation of Phil into a more competitive person.
He couldn't just progress to no-more-Mister-Nice-Guy because of competition and belittling from his father, because that had been there his whole life.

But he needed to break free from it at the end so that he was doing it all without an artificial ingredient, just as he needed to pull the Italian kids from the field and let Sam and the other kids do the final winning.
