on the park bench

Can anyone explain the citizens who sit on a park bench opposite a sculpture of a human figure. They appear to sit in shifts, relieving each other at perhaps 8-hour intervals.

I was wondering about that as well, but I have not found out what sculpture it is...reckons its a sculpture of a "cuban-hero" from one of the revolutions. not to sure though, only guessing

Cuban hero? Yes he is. This is the famous bronze statue of John Lennon by Jose Villa placed in Lennon Park, Havana. For more info, see http://www.blythe.org/nytransfer-subs/alarcon-lennon.html.

(Alarçon is the president of the Cuban parliament.)

hello , im cuban so I know exactly whatthe statue is.

as somebody said it is John Lenon. Ther eis a security person assigned to the statue 24 hours a day since Lenon's glasses have been stolen too many times.

This is one of thousands surreal situations that can be found in Cuba today.

Don'they have another Statue of another Cuban Hero "El Caballero de Paris". jajajajajiji. This are bronze stutes aren't they?

I am not sure exsactly were it is. But if I remember correctly someone told me, or I saw in Google Earth. It is right accross from the "Colon Cementary"??

I am sure you know better than I, but how many of these statues are there in Havana. Just Lennon and El Caballero? Don't they have some other ones in Havana Vieja (I don't remember what they are or is there one over in H.V.?

I guess at lease "El Caballero" was a Cuban Hero. He was at lease a Celeb. I remember being a little, little boy and seeing him walking around Havana. Once I saw him walking across a "solar" from Avenida Camaguey, across to 11 in Casino Deportivo. I was in a hurry to play with some kids, so I did not see where he went, but I remember being very impressed seeing him walk in my Hood. That is my last memory of him. Talk about excentric. I think he was Spanier by birth, but I am not sure.

I don't think that the statue of John Lennon is guarded any more, I passed by that park a few years ago, since i don't leave in Cuba anymore, and there wasn't a guard there. Probably was set at the time someone stole John Lennon's glasses, and we been Cubans and going always to the extremes, they pu a guard there. And for sure when all the fuss around that die away they remove it.

As for "El Caballero de Paris" statue; it is just outside, if I remember correctly, the "San Francisco de Asis's Basilica" near the Old Cathedral. I won't consider "El Caballero" a cuban hero, but one of those "picturesque" characters found in almost every city, he was always wandering the streets of old Havana, and those who knew him said that he had a great eloquence and funny or amusing speeches. I think I read once that New York has or had one of these characters who called himself the King of the city and ask for Royal fees in some establishments.
