Coming in second in the marathon

Ralph comes in second place in the marathon, losing by a hair. He and and his friends are all sad and depressed.

COME ON! If I came in second in a marathon, I'd be jumping for joy! Hey if I was 5,000th in the marathon I'd be jumping for joy. Just completing marathon would give me a feeling of euphoria & accomplishment that would last a long long time.

The actual goal was to save is mother. That is why they were sad. The race was the means, not the end.
