Who was the man bringing news from the front?

The man who came to tell the boys news from the front, looked like he was from some kind of church. At school with history class (in the Netherlands) they told us that Nationalsozialismus was a strictly atheist political view. So I don't get why a preacher or some figure like that would work at a German elite school in '42. Would somebody explain this to me? Or am I just mistaken and was no preacher?
