plotholes

The first time i saw this, i was definitely intrigued but some of the plotholes bothered me too much. Can someone please answer them for me. (SPOILERS*)

1. Why did tom put a real knife in owen's backpack? Did tom think that it would scare owen and showing the knife to the class wasn't part of the plan?

2. Why did tom go along with the prank after finding out randall was alive? Was Regina also in on it. What were regina and tom saying in the end after professor walker got shot?

3. Why did Lewis go along with the prank after finding out his attacker was graham?

Did Graham, Randall, and Tom think they were just pranking Mercedes, Regina, and Owen in the final scene?

It seems like the director and writer were just following the motto of avoid suspicion, manipulate your friends, and eliminate your enemies. I think they couldn't figure out how to avoid the plotholes or they didn't focus on being realistic enough.

ok, i figured out question 1. It's because tom thought owen trashed his room. But when the two of them were talking in their room about what tom should wear at the haloween party, they seemed to get along. Because tom planted the knife in owen's backpack, tom still thought owen trashed his room. Tom even mentions it in the final chapel scene. So, I still don't get why would tom think owen trashed his room.

Because everything was destroyed in his room except for owen stuff. He had no answers and probably just thought it was him. You have to remember. Owen was a deliquent as well. And after destroying all of Tom stuff he decided to get him back.

This is the kind of movie where every one of your questions (plus a million others) is answered with the same response:

It was all part of the plan.

In having just recently watched this movie again, I think Tom put the knife in there simply to scare Owen when he opened his bag (perhaps at the suggestion or at least with the knowledge of Dodger). I don't think either Tom or Dodger could have foreseen (nor wanted) Owen dropping the knife in class and getting caught by Bon Jovi. Dodger didn't know at that time that Owen saw her and Bon Jovi making out the night before. Using that as leverage was the only thing Owen had to blackmail Bon Jovi in not having Owen kicked out of the school. Had he not known that, Owen would have been expelled and Dodger's plan to have him shoot Bon Jovi later on would not have occurred.

They were all in on the elaborate prank to some degree to punish Owen and Mercedes for having them confined to campus for the weekend. (Seems a little extreme and elaborate for a weekend "grounding", but oh well.) However, it is clear that not everyone was in on every aspect of the plans throughout the movie. I.e. Lewis did not know that Graham was going to fake attack Mercedes. Tom didn't know that Lewis trashed his room or that Mercedes would be in his car. Dodger didn't know Regina was the library stalker. And I don't think anyone else knew for certain that Dodger was sending the IMs.

But by the time they reach the chapel at the end, Tom, Dodger, Regina, Graham, and Randall all knew of the plan to get back Owen (and Mercedes) later that night. Mercedes and Lewis were let in on the entire plan shortly thereafter. Owen, of course, was never let in on the plan until after he shot Bon Jovi.

Yep Tom and Regina were in on the plan as soon as they were already in the chapel. That's how Regina somehow got blood on her top for them to conveniently discover Randall seemingly dead. And that's why they don't agree to go back with him
