How The Ending Could Have Been A Million Times Better

If we were left to question whether or not Dodger was actually the killer. I think that was the intent to a certain degree and the execution fails miserably.

It's been sometime now since I've seen the movie but I don't recall having any questions at the end. If that was their intent, ambiguity, then they failed hard.

Although I agree, that may have made the ending more interesting. I think it is fine how it is, however.

I disagree. I love the ending how it is.

I'd have liked it if the last line was never said, and if the question remained to the viewer whether the movie was about a scorned teenaged girl getting her elaborate revenge or how a tactless high school prank dragged a new student down into suspicious paranoia. I wanted the outcome of the movie to rest on who believed Dodger's tears, and who thought she was faking.

"Ah. Multiple exclamation points, the true sign of a deranged mind."

Errr that last line was brilliant! *SPOILERS?*

The entire concept of the film is around the Boy who cried wolf story. Over the course of the movie the teenages tell so many lies and half truths that even the Police start to ignore them, hence how it ends with "Besides, whose going to believe you?"

It was superb, and well delivered by Lindy Booth too.

Totally agree. I love the way - just before she says the line - that her eyes and her tear-streaked face both slowly harden ever so slightly...

Wonderful piece of acting by Lindy Booth.

So did I.

Me to.

The ending to Shutter Island is ambigious. Nothing is cut,and dry.

I loved the ending. Owen needs to leave that school and forget about Dodger. lol.

reply

The ending is definitely very good. Though I wish Dodger had given more of an evil smirk or something after Owen figured out her plan.

reply

I think she raised her eyebrow. In fact I believe the director mentioned that in the commentary. That's smirk enough.

reply

The last time was absolutely BRILLIANT, the last 2 shots should of been replaced with her smiling walking away or just stay on his reaction about she says the line. I think it was more about the direction or editing than the script what took away a bit of impact to the ending.

Would of been better to leave the murderer unknown imho (kind of agree with the OP).

Makes the film seem far less plausible and realistic when Dodger's elaborate plan is revealed both in a) how she perfected everything and nothing went wrong. b) how Owen found out seemingly on a whim and put all the pieces together.

Had they just left it at the part where the group is found to of been pulling all the pranks themselves (which was genius and very unpredictable), it'd of been at least an 8/10 movie.
