Let's discuss this movie

I really would like to take the chance, to discuss (finally !) a turkish movie. My hope is to be followed by others...

Let me start with my impression of the movie, where I have to admit that I was surprised that there were so much negative negative discussions, after I really had found it quite interesting.
These negative voices can be seperated into two groups (In my opinion of course): The first, I think is the audience whithout movie knowledge. I don't want to be missunderstood, but I really think that most of the people who didn't liked the movie had other expectations. They probably had heared or even watched Lead Actor Cem Yilmaz 's show, and thougth they would laugh every 20 second for about 2 hours. That's not the point of course, as it is something else to shoot a movie then to amuse people at a comedy show. Also there are these kind of people of went to a movie 5 times in their lives, and like to critize everything. I bet they were the ones who liked !! "Asmali Konak" 6 months ago, so no value on their opinion.
The other kind of audience is the one with too much expectaitons. I have to remind that this movie was shot in year 2002, and that the subject never went off the media. People were like: "We have wated almost 2 years to watch it, and THIS is what we get ?" So they probably were exptecting something like the "meaning of life" presented on a silver plate...

To come back to the movie, I first of all have to admit that I am a real fan of Cem Yilmaz and his intelligance. He closed the leck of a "weak" screenplay with very clever Jokes, so he will hopefully have better scripts in future. The usage of slang on the other hand really confirms his caracter of a typical turkish citizen, also quite impressive as Logar the commander. The cast was good selected, mostly already succesful actors on TV and cinema. Must also say that I was pretty surprised by the costume and expecially the computer animated scenes.

To finalize, I would like to point out that I would not overrate this movie with 7.7 like it is at the time. But still enjoy the rebirth of turkish film-making. I hope that this will encourage more people to come back into this business.
I would like to close with my rating of 6 out of 10.

Please react and let me know your thoughts...

Your comment is really objective and well-structured, but i still think that your rating is low for the movie. I have watched this movie 3 times and i have never bored or never say `lets get out here` during the film. This can be a good criteria for a comedy movie and three times is a great succes i think. We can categorize this film with Aeroplane 1-2, Scary Movie and so on. I have to admit that GORA is the best among these. But i am pretty sure that someone who hasnt spent 10 years in Turkey can`t understand this film. So we shouldn`t expect from foreigners to appretiate or to praise it. Because generally in Turkey something especially for the art a piece has a value if foreigners praise it. For me this film deserve at least 8 out of 10.

Imagine a world in copmlete harmony dancing and touching each other

What???? this movie is better than Airplane?? I dont care how funny Cem Yilmaz is, Airplane is one of the greatest comedies of all time, and it has more jokes in the first 5 minutes than all of GORA. I think Vizontele is better than GORA.....

AIRPLANE AND BLAZING SADDLES ARE THE GREATEST COMEDIES EVER

Peace

Look my dear friend. This is your taste of humour. I can't discuss your choices. But let me tell you what i think about airplane, this movie is made up american style cold jokes and these jokes are nonsense for people who doesnt know American Culture. This is the same for GORA. Ýt's a nonsense comedy for an American. Because he or she doesn't know Turkish Culture and maybe it's true that there are more jokes in airplane but i don't think that these jokes are for my sense of humour.

Vizontele is a good film also but in my opinion GORA is better. At least i enjoyed much better at GORA. Furthermore I hate when there are serious love scenes in a comedy movie.

I have to admit that Airplane is really one of the best of it's kind in my opinion too...
But kentach is surely right that the "sense" of humour can easely tend to be nearer on cultural basis. You can't fight your taste of watching the movie, as long as everyone repects each others opinion.

The only thing I want to remind, and which is something like the most positive angle on G.O.R.A, is that this movie was created from the ashes of turkish film industry ! We have to admit that we don't have a "working" film industry in turkey, we don't have any investors for the same, and we don't have a decent audience...

I think Cem Yilmaz did a very good job, and I think that the discussions about the movie are not fair. Like the movie or not..., but please respect it...

I think the quality of visual effects in the movie was ample. GORA was not designed to compete with serious sci-fi movies such as Starwars, where the audience must be drawn into the reality of the story. GORA slags off sci-fi movies, it does not explain a sci-fi story. It points out the stupidities and the predictabilities in mainstream American science fiction. Hence, IMHO, the visual effects were just fine.

We also have to acknowledge the differences between acting in a comedy film and doing a stand-up show. Cem Yilmaz is a superb stand-up comedian but there are many examples of stand-up performers that disappointed their fans in comedy movies. In a stand-up show one has the sole control over the audience. A movie is collaborative performance with many elements.

I think some of my compatriots go to far when they express their views on GORA. Some claim it to be the best Turkish comedy movie ever. It isn't. It is not easy to surpass the quality of "Hababam Sinifi" and Turkish comedy actors such as Sener Sen and Kemal Sunal. However, Cem Yilmaz and other actors (the actresses were pish) did a very good job. And guess what, he is only 31 years old. He still has got long time to excel himself. It was a great trial, and GORA shall be a milestone in Turkish movie due the visual effects.

Some other compatriots of mine are just too cruel in their criticism. GORA is a good movie that deserves praise and not "the worst ever" or "waste of time". I suspect some of the overly negative comments are coming from our darling anti-Turkish diaspora in Europe and N. America. Of course, I might be wrong.

My notes:

1) It's really a good film having a continuous run with both story and funny scenes. Maybe the most beautiful quote was "Man, everyone here speaks Turkish, I cant understand who is Turkish or not in this spaceship", making fun of other films where all extra-terrestrials (SOMEHOW) speak English. :)

2) Jokes were really cool. At this point I must say that those who got disappointed were expecting too much from a comedy which is making fun of other films. Ladies and gents, please realize that most comedies dont need an original story (like the great story of Truman Show). Usually their stories are similar, the main point lies within the quality of jokes. If I were Cem Yilmaz, I would have tried to make the film as GLOBAL as possible, but even with this version the 90% of the funny parts can be caught by non-Turkish audience. It usually just stresses "A typical Turk can be very cool at the space stage ;)", nothing more.

3) It could have been better if Cem Yilmaz didnt have too much personal influence on the whole film. I mean, for example, he didnt need to play the Commander Logar, the character was very unsophisticated, Cem, himself, didnt add anything to make it special. Of course, Logar didnt have to be special.. But why did Cem play that role while he was already having 2 other? This made people think Cem Yilmaz wanted to put himself in front of the film.

4) People usually complain there were too many gays in the film. Well, what can we say? World is changing, so why not space?

5) When I saw "the rape of the robot" scene, I thought if a non-Turkish author/director did put a similar scene in his film, he could have been immediately f.... up by Turkish users' because of his misleading content which shows Turks as perverts. But that's not serious, that's fun, you know :) And I'm glad we turks are the first ones who made love to an e.t (LOL)

well I have seen it twice, just to be sure of my comments.
like i said previously, i liked it, still to comprehend averyting
it is another story.
We can speculate a whole lot, but i think it was meant to be weird and mysterious, i have put my 2 cents in the understand threads, but watching it again just got me confuse a bit more.
For me the fun parts are the childrens actings...

it was scary and mostly beleivable.
Anyway i don't recommend this for everybody, but if you're a horror fan...
YOU will like it.
