G.O.R.A.-Very Funny but not a Universal Film

I really liked G.O.R.A., I also think that it is one of the best Turkish comedy films ever. On the other hand, I definitely do not think that it can be funny in another language or can be found funny in an other culture other than Turkish culture. It is obvious that they did not care for other viewers, but I do not blame them for that reason, because they have the right to make movie for a specific culture. Very funny film, but not for people other than people living in Turkey...

We were not born with the American humor installed in our minds but we are 'trained' to laugh at them. So, as we produce more movies like this, non-Turkish people will start tasting the Turkish humor.

Noone has to take it as personnally, because there isn't anything about "intelligence". It's just that, if you were borned in Turkey, if you lived in Turkey with the Turkish culture, you could understand all the jokes and you would enjoyed much more than someone who's not Turkish. I am totaly agree that it is a very funny film. And also I think that it is not a universal film. But Cem Yilmaz can also make universal comedy movies. I am just not so sure that if they could be as successful as G.O.R.A

You can't understand the intelligent Turkish humor if you can't speak Turkish. There are very good jokes of our own culture and word tricks. Someone who doesn't speak English can't understand some word jokes in American movies too. Because when you translate it you can't get it. You should know the culture and those word tricks. I think it is a good movie, not perfect but good.

I wrote these assuming that you can't speak Turkish, if you can just ignore me ;)

I can speak turkish. I'm a turkish. There isn't any intelligent turkish humor at this movie. A silly, moron movie. I suppose you're a fun of Cem Yilmaz so you accept this foolish movie easly...

Well, I'm not Turkish but I found this movie to be one of the funniest I have ever seen!!!! I've seen it 8 times, and I don't think that it's funny only for Turkish people. You should remember that unlike Americans, other nations watch foreign films and they understand them.

I agree with ginoska. I'm not Turkish and the movie was great. There were obvious references to Turkish issues which one could not grasp completely but surely, a movie which spoofs mainstream sci fi films should be able to reach other audiences. Also, the actor/writer created a really likable character which is easily universal in his appeal.

There is no doubt that I missed alot of jokes in the film due to my ignorance of Turkish affairs but it was still very funny. So I guess the film was hazardously funny for Turks.

As I also said in the other topic, this is not completely true - I think it can be found funny in the other Balkan cultures as well, cause they have many similarities to the Turkish culture (since they all used to be in the Osman empire). I am Bulgarian and I found it really funny and I liked the Bulgarian translation (though I realise it must have been much easier to translate it from Turkish into Bulgarian, rather than Turkish into English, considering the same cultural reasons).

translations are really hard especially in movies and tv series,

for an example, in one episode of charmed where gnomes are mentioned, piper said "why is the g silent?" but in turkish there aren't any silent letters in any of the words that would mean gnomes so in the subtitles it was "why are they called gnomes?"

think about it, if they kept it the same and translated why is the g silent people would be really confused...

Well I am Bulgarian and I really liked the movie. I agree it's not an universal movie, but it can be fully appreciated only in the Balkans.

I'm not agree at all, it's a lot more understandable than you think, i'm french and i saw in it's movie a lot of common reference to usual, and caricatural vision of US Sci-fi movie.
I laugh all over the movie and i don't think that i don't understand something. But in the way... I never laughed watching a US comedy, don't think it's because you're turkish you're feeling the same way, it's just because it's really dumb and it's another kind of humour than G.O.R.A.

I came here to rave about how funny this film is (I'm from the U.S.), and find it nearly as funny that someone is saying I can't/won't like it because I'm not Turkish!

The movie is absolutely dripping with American pop culture references and I loved the Turkish take on it. I admit foreigners may miss out on some of the references but not enough to hurt your appreciation for the movie. This is the 2nd best movie I've seen ALL YEAR, right after OSS 117 Cairo Nest of Spies.

Sometimes it's nice to see proof that the stupid inhabit every country, a nice reminder for the interweb denizens who claim only Americans are. Thanks OP!

Ooh, a lesson in not changing history from Mr. "I'm my own grandpa!"

Cem Yilmaz uses a lot of delivery-comedy, like Dane Cook, so some things do get lost in translation, however, the many funny ideas of the movie are so abundant and are of good quality, that they rival other funny movies, (at least in my opinion) such as Scary Movie series.

you all say that that film is not universal!!!!Stop and think a while....Were we_turkish_born to be able to understand english or american homour??No!But why can we laugh at the jokes on a movie just the same second an american or an english laugh at?coz we've all grown up with their movies..cartoons..Right??And I think as our film-industry grow up,they begin to get it!And nowadays we are rather fast I guess:)
