Was William a total a-hole or is there another explanation?

...for his deplorable behavior?

His wife is ill...so he goes to a hooker

He gets jealous seeing the hooker with another client...so he buys her exclusivity and an apt.

He needs a new nanny... so he moves the hooker into his house

His wife is conscious...and he rapes her

A-hole or was he more complex than that in the book ?

reply

Nope. That's just William.

It's not so much that William is a bad person but that he was a product of his age and class. At that time in England class was was a very big deal and William is a product of his class, he doesn't believe his daughter needs an education because she'll only grow up to be someone's wife and mother. He likes Sugar but she is a servant, even before she becomes Sophie's governess, There would never be a thought to him living with, let alone marrying her, because she is of a much lower class than him.

So is he an *beep* Yes by today's standards but it's almost like he didn't have a choice because of the time he was raised in.

Darling, I am trouble of the most spectacular kind!

He was weak.

The wild, cruel animal is not behind the bars of a cage. He is in front of it.

Yes, he is an a-hole, but not because he is a bad person but because he is weak. As someone said, he behaves the way he does because he is a product of his time and place. But also because he's just a weak person with an inability to stand up for himself or anyone else.

He was incredibly selfish and self-absorbed. He took to Sugar because she wiped him off after he pissed all over himself and made him feel strong and powerful. He raped his mentally ill wife while she was in obvious distress because he wanted her and her feelings were not to be considered.

Major a-hole.
