Duck and Dan

In the opening shot where Duck runs into Dan on the bridge, is there the implication that the two "knew" each other from activities at The Watch?

Actually, on first viewing I got the impression they knew each other. Not only that they knew each other, but that Duck was able to intuit something was upseting Dan to the point that he was considering doing something tragic. That's why he waited until Dan had driven away...and why he continued to check on him.

I watched the DVD tonight. I thought Duck knew who Dan was and, yes, intuited that Dan was troubled. However, I'm not so sure Dan knew Duck (other than perhaps recognizing him as a handyman in the small island community) or knew their common bond until, in the motel room, Duck said something to the effect, "maybe next year we'll have a parade" -- clearly identifying himself as part of "we" the gay community.

Duck and Dan were the two people of the watch that the whole mess was about. The Director, MacIvor, commented on a movie site that Duck recognized Dan as the "love of his life" which implies that they knew each other intimately. He also states that in the hotel room Duck is trying to reach Dan "one last time." And, in the car when Emily asked if he new him he replied with frustration "yes."
