I agree too! Imelda was brilliant!

reply

Staunton was robbed. Anyway you should hate the Academy members, not Swank, who was the second best out of the nominees.

Swank is pretty. And American. Such are the oscars.

You nailed it!

reply

Yes, a real shame, that.

Precisely.
Although, Ms. Swank also gave a great performance, I think Ms. Staunton earned that one; I wish the Academy would've had the guts to give it to her. But, the pretty American will almost always get the statue.

Hey, I'm still vexed about Helen Hunt winning Best Actress for "As Good As It Gets" over Judi Dench for "Ms. Brown", and Gwyneth Paltrow for "Shakespeare in Love" over Cate Blanchette for "Elizabeth."

reply

I have another one. How about Mira Sorvino winning for Mighty Aphrodite over Joan Allen for Nixon? I like Mira Sorvino but I don't think she had an Oscar worthy performance. The Oscar belonged to Joan Allen.

reply

Oh god - Mrs. Brown! I loved that one! It was amazing - and so is the Dame...

reply

I totally agree with you, "kkyxrabbit"! Judi Dench in, "Mrs. Brown", was pure perfection; it seems that an actor won't win one year, like Nicole Kidman in, "Moulin Rouge", when she should of, but will win for, "The Hours", because of wearing a prosthetic nose. Almost, like a pity prize, or to apologize to the actor, for not winning before. I loved, loved, loved Hilary Swank in, "Million Dollar Baby", but I have to admit, Imelda Staunton was better. ESPECIALLY, knowing there was no script; to perform off the cuff, THAT is talent!

reply

I agree with you that it's like apologizing to the actor for not winning one last year... But I don't agree Nicole won her "The Hours" Oscar simply for wearing a prosthetic nose, she was absolutely brilliant in that role. Her "Moulin Rouge" performance was a bit weaker, hence - no Oscar.

Jesus is coming-look busy!

Hello kkyrabit,

You are dead on about your post regarding how some actors/actresses win Oscars that they do not deserve. I was very upset in 1998 when milqutoast Gwyneth won instead of dynamic Cate Blanchett (whom I may add disappears into every character that she portrays). The same goes for Ms. Dench not winning for her portrayal of Queen Victoria. My other pet peeve was when they gave the Oscar to Nicole Kidman for her whooping 30 minute "cameo" in "The Hours". It should have gone to Salma Hayek was in every scene in "Frida" and carried that film with non nominated Alfred Molina. Imelda Staunton was a powerhouse of quiet acting. She should have won! The whole cast was some of the best that I've seen.

Hilary Swank looks like Matt Daman and vice versa

reply

Then I would have to say that Matt Damon is quite a beautiful woman.

That made me laugh so hard !!!

Couldn't put any better than this.

reply

You shouldn't hate Swank. It's not her fault she won, it's the Academy's. Hate them for making the wrong decision.

reply

OK. That is easy enough. I've had nothing but contempt for them since "Kramer vs. Kramer" anyway ;)

I completely agree, Imelda Staunton should have won the Oscar instead of Hilary.

i actually thought winslet should have won her oscar that year. its the first performance of hers ive thought was actually underrated, i was truly astonished watching her.
staunton wouldve been my second, and kidman my third (for "birth") despite her not even getting a nomination.

"they should give nicole kidman an oscar for being able to show any emotion after THAT much botox".

I haven't seen Vera Drake so I have no opinion on this topic (just on the board 'cause I'm thinking about watching the movie), but I just wanted to say, MinaGodiva, I LOVE your signature! "Come Wander with Me" is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard, and The Twilight Zone is one of the greatest shows in history.

"He's already attracted to her. Time and monotony will do the rest."

while I thought Imelda did a fine job and the movie was good, I think Hilary was FAR better that year. I'm sure it may not be popular in this thread, but I found Imelda to have two emotions -- over-the-top cheeriness and over-the-top crying. There were lonnnnnnggggg stretches of scenes with her standing stone-faced with a tear hanging in her eye. Not exactly a lot of breadth, imo.

Yes.
It was painful to see such unrealistic/cartoon-y performance.
But I'm sure it was caused by the bad directing from Mr. Leigh. I don't know why, but almost every character in Vera Drake seemed to overact and be self-conscious at times. It made the movie unable to transfer the emotion it was trying to create.

The academy awards affirmed no one should take them seriously when they gave Marisa Tomei an oscar for a comedic performance in which she did not have one humorous line. and Ben Affleck winning one led me to completely ignore the whole process ......... could they have really trashed the greatest tragedy in the history of the United States(at the time) with such a cheap and tawdry movie?

reply

I saw this movie today for the first time. It was simply one of the best movies I've ever watched. Yes,Imelda Staunton should have won an Oscar for the role. Saying it was brilliant is an understatement!
