one plot hole that angred me.

when susan surandon is saying why she hates x-mas she says she got pregnant with her baby in the summer and then it died the day it was born on x-mas but if they baby was concieved in the summer that would only give her 6 months meaning the baby was born 3 to 4 months premature.

So? Many babies are born premature. What I thought was a plothole was when surandon was in the cab with robin williams who she can only see. Wouldn't the driver find it strange?

But ohwell it's a good movie so it doesn't matter that much.

reply

I saw the movie in its entirety for the first time today.

It's very sugary, but some of us need it at this time of year.

My only beef was with the guy who had his hand broken so that he'd get to experience the emergency room Christmas party. His character was superfluous b/c he wasn't interconnected to the other characters w/ problems as the other characters were.

Otherwise, it was a great, heart-warming movie.

reply

I don't mind the sugar coating. I love films like this that does show us that there is still things to love in life no matter how hard life can get

reply

I noticed it too when she said that the baby was born and died on Christmas day, but it didn't bother me much as another plot hole in the movie.

When Artie (the man from restaurant) was standing outside of Mike's(policeman) appartment. How the hell did he know where Mike's house was?

reply

This may be too emo, for some people, but my daughter was due December 10th, and she was instead born October 23, and also died on that day so it is plausible.

reply

I'm really sorry to hear that.

reply

Sorry to hear about your daughter. She and I would've shared a birthday. I was also born on December 10, which is now three days away.

reply

My birthday is December 10th, Happy Brrthday!!

reply

And happy belated to you, paisan!

reply

Artie followed Mike home duh.

I'm with the monkey that's using the force!

Maybe that's why the baby died -- because it was so premature. Maybe it's not a plot hole. I have to watch it again. Did she say she conceived during the summer, or that she found out she was pregnant? Two different things.

And in answer to the question as to why the cabdriver did not think it strange that Rose was talking to herself:

First of all, how do we know she was the only one who could see him? The nurse never saw him, but maybe she only saw with her eyes and Rose saw with her heart.

Also, if you're familiar with big city cabdrivers, they pretty much ignore someone talking to themself. It's the wisest thing to do. Besides, maybe there was a plastic partition and she was speaking so softly, he couldn't hear her.

When viewing a story about a "holiday miracle," sometimes it's best to just relax and suspend disbelief. It's more fun that way.

I only saw this film yesterday and already all it's interwoven plots are confuzzling me! I have to watch it again too! Did she mention where the baby's Dad went off too? Did he die? Where is he? Why has he left her alone, and if he has died, where are his family to look after her? Doesnt she have any sisters or brothers, cousins, extra family? Why IS she so alone?

The scene where Rose's assistant relays Rose's phone messages to her is a great little exposition scene. We learn that Rose has a sister, but it seems she's become distant since the death of their father. We also learn that Rose's ex-husband is now remarried with two children and living in Connecticut. The exact reasons for the divorce are unclear, but we can assume that their baby daughter's death played a part.

Early in the movie, Rose's assistant was giving Rose her phone messages. There was a message from Rose's sister that she now couldn't be there for Christmas. IIRC, there was a message from her ex-husband about his current wife and child(ren). So we learned then that Rose is divorced.

I agree totally!

Not a single person complaining about a "plot hole" in this thread knows what a plot hole is.

I think under the circumstances a woman wouldn't be thinking too pedantically about the time line. "In the summer" could mean the beginning of May, maybe even April if the weather was nice (so she would remember it as the summertime) so that would give her up to eight months, plus allow for the possibility of the baby being premature.

I actually thought that was a great scene - the awkward silence in the bar, then we suddenly see her holding the prize, the Christmas tree, in the next scene at the hospital. They were either too embarrassed NOT to give her the prize, or they genuinely thought hers was the "best" story.
