okay she comes off as a cool amazing, who wouldn't want her to be your mother, mom... she cares deeply for ellen pages character... and why would she bottle wine while her daughter is screaming for help?[ in my opinion, i thought that shh was fake... and one more question... what was up with those dance's? or not really dances, but lame retarded moves? oh ya and did the "boss" feel threatened by ellen pages character because his F()&* session with her lasted 2 seconds?...
shareAbout the mother: Did you even get what the whole film is about? It's about a cult. It's about how cults change people's minds and make them think that the cult is the only important thing. Not their family and friends. This is the whole point of the movie.
About the boss: I don't think he was afraid of her. I think he knows she wants out and he sees her as a threat to his power because of who she might take with her.

i think the whole reason behind sherry running away is explained by the mother's later behavior. she wasn't a very good mother, clearly. when that one girl was saying to sherry how much she'd love to have a mom like that and sherry says, 'trust me, you don't' it's obvious the mother has shown weakness in the past as a parent. her mother seemed at first to care a lot, but she got brainwashed and was young and stupid.
shareI think watching the Spanish Festival describes the mother fully. Her intentions are always good (i.e. the care for her daughter), but she can be distracted by her own interest (i.e. enjoying the rave, dancing, witnessing the fire, etc). She, like her daughter, is searching for a place to belong. Her relationship with her daughter has failed (Bat's relationship with her mother has failed). She's attempted to reconnect (Bat gets into the car with her after the festival), but something pulls her away (Bat leaves again). The mother is like all the other people in the film, she's trying to find love. During that scene she had to pick the love of the group/boss or her daughter's uncertain love.
