why is going into the pit supposed to be such a horrible thing ?

judging on what mad axe said to bat it was a bad thing.

It's a small, enclosed place; it would make people claustrophobic and on top of that, it would smell bad, it's dark and muddy and probably pretty cold (especially at night) and there would be bugs and all that down there too...

Plus, once you're down there, you're helpless and totally at the mercy of other people because you can't get out until they let you out which is shown when the last time Bat gets put down there and the girl, whose name I've forgotten, dies. And it would be mind numbingly boring, being stuck down there for more than a day (hell, it'd be boring being stuck down there for an hour nevermind a day -- and it's not like they could sleep the hours away, given the creepy factor and it being cold and wet).

And I don't think they're given food or whatever either... so basically it's creepy and uncomfortable - it's a mild form of mental and physical torture.

Really, would you want to be trapped down a well?

Yes, it would smell unimaginatively foul and be unsanitary with countless people trapped down there for 24 hours or more having urinated and defecated on the ground.

That, and the claustrophobic factor and the helplessness would be pretty scary, especially for those like Bat who are starting to figure out what a self-serving, mentally unstable, hypocrite POS their leader is. Pissing down on them when they're trapped down there was so very messed up!

Yes, and while you're not exactly devoid of sensory information down there, you're pretty close (at least a lot closer than out in the open), and sensory depravation is one of the worst things you can do to a person.
