Significance of the weird names?

I couldn’t help wondering what the deal was with all the characters in this movie having weird last names. I assumed they were in latin and probably meant something if you understood them, but a quick google search turned up next to nothing.

The only one that seems to have a double meaning is Prigusivac, which means "silencer" or "muffler" in croatian. Anybody have any ideas about what some of the others might stand for?

I don't think the names are particularly "weird": they look Slavic to me, and I had thought they were Polish, not Croatian, but What do I know?

Period. Comma. Shift Key. They are your friends. Learn to love them.

Maybe weird wasn't the right word. How about...foreign? Or something. It wouldn't have stood out to me at all, except that everyone's name sounded like they had similar origins.

And I don't think the characters were supposed to be Croatian, but Prigusivac happens to be a Croatian word. Could just be a coincidence.

those are serbian last names, and prigusivac means silencer in both serbian and croatian... cheers

You have very good explanation in Did You Know Trivia section what Prigusivac, Bauk and Cetnik means on Serbian. And, I just want to add that last names Stankovic and Zdravkovic are really exist in Serbia, as a matter of fact there are very common last names, especially Stankovic (if you type in google you will see). (Jovic, Zivkovic and Mirkovic also really exist, which are in movie). It's weird that I'm answering to your question you asked more then 3 years ago, but I had to, because I'm from Serbia, and I was surprised when I saw that last names.
Greetings.

Simple, it takes place in Minnesota which has a strongly eastern European population.

That's interesting, I lived in Minneapolis for a while and never noticed that about the area. I think the bit on the trivia page about the names being Serbian and having significant meanings in that language is the real answer, though that was added a few years after I originally posed this question.

I regret using the word weird as the title of this thread, but then again, I think it still applies in the case of Dorkus as someone's first name.

They are Serbian names. The movie is set in New Pristina, the "old" Pristina is in Kosovo now, once it was Serbian. When Heck is at the interview with the stern lady she writes on his form "serb". I figured it was supposed to be set in a town with a high Serbian population. Nothing weird about it.

I've said twice already in this thread that weird was a poor word choice, though I maintain that they're uncommon/noticeable.
