Walter

I remember this as being the very first film ever shown on Channel 4 on its first night of broadcasting.I wasn't aware that it was Sir Ian McKellen who played the part of Walter though. There is one part in the film that I always remember as being very touching and poingnant, the scene that shows Walters mother dead in her bed surrounded by Walters dads pigeons.
If there is anyone reading this that hasnt seen the film, do yourself a favour and hunt it down. you wont be disappointed

It was the highlight of their opening night and was rather sad and harrowing in places.

I'm watching it lol! I remember it on Channel 4's opening night. Don't think I've seen it since then.

EDIT: That guy who bathed Walter in the mental hospital is Donald off Benidorm! (the old swinger)

I also watched Walter in its opening night. Its also the first time I saw Ian McKellen and this just reminded what a wonderful performance he gave. Its still harrowing even after three decades.

I watched this last night for the first time since 1982. One of the previous post siad that it was a truly awful film. I see where they are coming from. Its harrowing to watch but its by no means a terrible film, its very powerful! I sat and watched it with my stomach in knots and all I could think of was tha the scenes set in the sanitorium must be what hell is like!
Its a fantastic film, it doesnt pull any punches and certainly doesnt sugar coat its message (Who really had mental issues, the patients or those supposedly caring for them). I had know idea that there was a follow up, I'll be seeking it out
