Can't decide whether I liked it or hated it...

Watched it yesterday with my girlfriend, had no idea what it was about, it was just hanging on my watchlist for years. My girlfriend fell asleep after the first hour and told me she hated it in the morning, I still haven't quite made up my mind.

Of course the cast was excellent and the sets were stunning. But I couldn't relate to the story. Or sympatise with Cayden. I thought he was a pretentious, self-absorbed prick. Perhaps it was the director projecting his own self-image image onto the character, maybe a bit too much. I mean it was a very peculiar type of self-loathing combined with adoration from everyone around. I don't think his story was really that big and I don't think any of the ideas or supposed revelations in the movie were particularly profound.

At the same time I thought it was a funny movie and life-affirming in a way. Maybe the director wasn't trying to encompass the full scale of human suffering and existential issues. Maybe it was indeed a movie about a depressed, self-absorbed prick and how he sees the world around him, losing his touch with reality to the point of finding someone else to play his role. Then it's actually pretty good.

Thank you for the reply, I think it's a very good analysis. In that sense I think it did a fantastic job in conveying authors ideas. I think these themes are typical of American artsy cinema. All those characters losing hair and gobbling down prozak, while reflecting on their place in the universe. You see it in Coen Brothers, Woody Allen, Charlie Kaufman, Sophie Barthes... All the constant anxiety, depression, contemplation on peoples place in the world, fear of aging or death, etcetera. But in this movie there is just this lack of self-irony or sentimentality that usually goes with these movies. That really helps you to relate with the ideas or with the characters. Even if you aren't crossing 50s or Jewish or whatever. That was the part that I didn't like. I thought Cold Souls, Birdman, A Serious Man and Adaptation were all more enjoyable than Synechdoche because of that.

Charlie Kaufman is either brilliant (ADAPTATION) or not.
