Catholic Orphanages?

WDF
The Stooges, aka Howard and Fine, were Jewish!
The writers must have been thinking the Blues Brothers. Catholic orphanages are so old school anyways.

What are they doing? Why do they come here?
Some kind of instinct, memory, what they used to do.

So was Sister Larry David

An orphanage run by nuns is the kind of cliche I would expect to see on one of the Stooges shorts from the 40's. I never gave it a second thought when watching this movie.

reply

I guess so, no one talked much openly about being Jewish in the 1940s. I only saw the trailer & it just seemed so silly for a movie made recently

reply

What does being Jewish have to do with it? You don't have to be Catholic to be in a Catholic orphanage or school.

reply

It's a movie based on satire...it's not meant to be taken seriously.

Their beliefs had nothing to do with the routine let alone this film. In fact it is a simple good hearted plot, nothing more.

There's a certain level of inherent humor that can be found in Nuns Look at the boxing Nun puppet and the windup Nunzilla toy.

And saving places like orphanages or someone's house is a recurring Stooge trope.

I can only think of a couple times when the Stooges ever touched upon being Jewish. Curly once made a point about how much he liked a blintz with sour creme. In the context of a particular short, they would be whatever that short wanted them to be.

So the fact that the Stooges were Jewish in real life was never relevant in context to any given scenario. This movie emulates that element.

reply

Yeah I know, I was just kidding when I posted that. Back in those days, even though half the people in Hollywood were Jewish, everyone looked and sounded like a WASP in the movies.

reply

If you've ever watched the original shorts, there were several where they dressed as Santa Claus and a couple where Moe played Hitler. The original Stooges didn't have a problem with poking fun at their own religion and Hitler, who killed 100s of thousands of Jews. If any of the original Stooges were alive today I don't think any of them would have a problem with a new movie where they make a joke about 3 Jews growing up in a Catholic orphanage.

Yeah I know, I was just being a bit sarcastic. It was actually a funny plot element. Back then if you were Jewish, you didn't act it
