What's with all the dissapointment?

I thought this movie was great. Why are so many people displeased with it and giving it such a bad rating??

"Are you gonna shoot me?"

"That depends. Do you see me?"

reply

Just watched it, thought it was good fun and solid all action entertainment, also don't know what all the negativity is about.

reply

Because it's a terrible film. I rented this thing for a couple bucks at Blockbuster just to see how bad it was.

Wow. I got more than my money's worth.

It's like a 12 year old with some cinematic skills was given an unlmited budget and some screenwriting software.

It's that bad.

reply

Disagree there, sure its a bit cliche, but then thats an argument you can label virtually any movie these days.

Its not a great movie, its not a dire movie, its just guilty of being a bit average, the fact it cost so much to make doesn't help either, but other than that, its perfectly watchable, its not in the same league as Battlefield Earth for instance.

Oh, not, I very much disagree. If I were to shoot this film I would've tossed the script out the window, but kept the core premise and reworkd the story. I also would've fired the art director.

I had lunch with the special effects supervisor a few years back, and where he said it was an interesting project to work on even he hated the film. I didn't have the heart to tell him, but I didn't think too much of his dogfighting sequences. Though I have to admit, I thought the carrier traps were done well.

It's not just the cliches, it's really the lack of credibility. But then again, this film was made for the preadolescent and young 20-something market. Which is really a shame, because there was a good premise that could've gone the distance.

I don't know about this film but...

I wish people would stop saying/writing "Cliche" in place of "Cliched".

One is a noun the other an adjective. It's "a cliche" or it's "cliched" and only the latter would make sense in your sentence anyway. It reads badly and I'm aware that's how most of the US tend to write it but it really does grate on the ears (or eyes). Sorry for choosing you to say this to and I'm sure I'll get a load of abuse for highlighting it but it's used on nearly every thread eventually on IMDB. For a word so heavily used on here a little help on using the two forms correctly is only a friendly suggestion :)

Or for those that want to be even more pedantic than I, use "clichéd" (hold down ALT and type e then 130 on your numberpad or hold down the right 'ALT Gr' before typing an e)

This has been a public service announcement :)

Well, I notice that a lot of people not very fond of films never engage in a civilized discussion as to why they don't actually like the film, so I will perform the improbable:

1) I found the movie to be cliche. I know that someone on this thread said that with most movies, that's almost an inevitability. But a cliche is a cliche, in my opinion. (does anyone know who to put accent marks about letters?)

2) I found it to be rather anti-climactic, which also caused the movie to be unfulfilling, and was not very compelling. I was expecting a lot, but the fights were lacking, and I couldn't get attached to the characters. When they died, I felt no sympathy for them.

3) I did like the basic plot, which, as I said, was cliche, but I thought they could make it work. But they didn't.

I don't remember much about the film, but I didn't like it. And the black guy dies, I'm sure there's a point in that somewhere.

I don't poly-cotton to coping tropes, even my own.

"And the black guy dies, I'm sure there's a point in that somewhere."

I'm sorry to have to tell you pbm1138, but the Grim Reaper is no respecter of race.

reply

I know, but it's just that movie cliche at work, he was the only black character in the movie, and he dies. Looks at the tags for this movie. One of them is "Sole Black Character Dies."

I don't poly-cotton to coping tropes, even my own.

reply

The only black character in the movie? Did you forget about Captain Dick Marshfield?
That's Captain Dick Marshfield, the black dude they gave an aircraft carrier to? If there were any kind of racist agenda going on in the minds of the film makers, whether deliberately or unconsciously, I seriously doubt they would have picked Joe Morton to be in charge of the giant, floating, nuclear powered airport. I'm sure you'd agree it's a pretty important role and a prestigious part.
He also survives the whole flick - Just sayin'

Press and hold the <alt> key and type "130" (without the scare quotes), then release the <alt> key. This will insert the character "é".

The machine turns evil, the black guy dies, the woman has to be rescued and the white macho pilot saves the day. Can it get more cliche? On top of that is a horrible script with mind-numbingly stupid dialogues.

This movie is an insult to human intelligence.

reply

I wouldnt say it was great and I can follow the negativity and its reasoning. A few people mention they thought it was cliched, which was a fair assessment, it was heavily predictable. But at the same time, you dont go and see a movie like this and expect a massively original plot, its an action movie. You look at the front cover of the DVD and you know exactly what its going to be and that the good guys will win in the end.

Being disappointed with the predictability of the plot and the cheesy writing would be like being disappointed with a cohen brothers movie because there was a lack of explosions and high action sequences, or being disappointed with an mike myers movie because there was no deep characterisation that explored the inner workings of the human soul. You know when you see movies that are booked as a certain genre what they are going to be before you walk in.

Admittedly, it was painful when "all" the music on the internet had been downloaded by the plane. but for what it was, this movie was a solid 6 or 6.5, if you compare it to the rest of its genre.

the machine turns evil? clearly your simple thinking did not comprehend what was going on.
edi wasn't evil, not by a long shot. watch the movie again with a more open mind, pay attention to the dialogue and then you will understand why it isn't evil.

reply

It's like Top Gun with giant lapses in logic, time frames and geography, albeit without the gay subtext.

Apparently, being a self-aware AI means you get a 24/7 hookup to the Internet and ability to download "all of the music" on the internets.

This movie was made by 12 year olds, for 12 year olds.

I just saw it last week. Bought it for $5 a few months ago but lost it in my bookcase of dvds. Found it and watched it one afternoon. It wasn't great. It was anti-climactic, was full of the usual cliches (damsel in distress, black guy dies, foreign and minority enemies) and it lost alot of tension. In other words, just another by-the-numbers Rob Cohen movie. And despite it being considered a flop, I'm sure he'll still be getting a go at another big blockbuster soon I imagine.

However, it was very entertaining and I think at some point I will watch it again. Interesting seeing Sam Shephard as a villain. Didn't think I'd ever see that.

I think that is my favourite criticism of a movie, ever.

"I am Jack's cold sweat."

to me the problem is that it was mismarketed.

the idea of 2 hours of a robot plane trying to fly around the world and nuke it (as presented in the ads) is absurd and likely turned nearly everyone off of it, including me. it was a pleasant surprise that this plot element is only about 10 minutes of the 2 hour running time. i mean i was expecting this to rank amongst the worst movies of all time (it's a long story as to why i actually watched it), but it was actually tolerable. a 6.5 for this movie is like a 9 for any other :-)

this movie might have done better had it been promoted as a movie about military greed and incompetence, or the nature of AI, or even survivalism in NK - all of which take up more screen time than "evil plane."

by the way, everyone and their mom knows the movie is about an automated plane that turns evil, and yet the writers try to build suspense over who the 4th pilot will be.

reply

I agree,

I really enjoyed the movie, sure it was full of the usual B type stuff but at the same we have to remember when it was made and how that would have affected the its reception. 2005, the war on terror, mix in topgun and firefox and you have a pretty fun film.

But the premise and the environment the film finds itself really influences its acceptance...

I wonder how it would faired now that transformers 1/2 are out and a lot science fiction films are coming out the wood work. Maybe it could have worked if it was cleaned up a bit and squeezed in between or rode the coattails of the big blockbusters.

Oh well, I do really wish the premise was a success... but alas...

i'm not ashamed to admit i quite liked the movie. i watched this back to back with "phone booth" and i preferred the former. plot holes? i really didn't expect a very coherent plot here so what's to nitpick about? to me it's a modern update on the late 70's early 80's B cliched movies at the height of the Cold War. i grew up on that so i just got myself into B-movie mode and enjoyed the ride (pun intended). on the other hand, i grew frustrated watching phone booth coz of some really stupid twists there.

reply

The first time I saw it I was like "dude that was so cool!"
The second time, which was yesterday, I wasnt as impressed but I still thought it was good. Now that I look back on it, EDI going from bad to good seemed to happen a little to quick and wasnt explained well.
