Why was the clumsy guy messing with the soup?

He later confesses to the rat that he doesn't want to cook, he was just trying to stay out of trouble. But if you're trying to stay out of trouble and have no desire to cook, then it makes no sense to mess with the soup.

Huge flaw in the writing

He knocked the pot of soup over while mopping so he added water to make up for the missing soup he spilled. Then he added stuff so it wasnt just water
