What is the matter with you people? 6.9/10????

How on earth could this film have only 6.9 out of 10? It may not be the best Australian film ever made, but it's darn good. It's great to see Cate Blanchett in a non-blockbuster film with her real accent, and it's great to see Martin Henderson not playing an American for once.

I found this film really sad, with brilliant acting and an amazing soundtrack. I'm not from Australia and I had never heard "Flame Trees" before and it's a great song, especially sung by the children's choir. I think it really says a lot about how one moves on with your life.

So, after all that.....what's with the 6.9 you fools?

It really, truly sucked, despite a great cast. I found myself dying for someone to care about.. huge plot holes.. why did Tracy lie to everyone around her that she was going to get the small business loan? why did Tracy keep coming 'round old druggie Lionel? What was wrong with Lionel? She's so codependent she even - a just-recovered junkie herself - goes out and scores smack for him - "but this is the last time". Righto, Lionel will just ask her brother next time.

The script managed to make criminal losers and drug deals boring.. a real achievement.

The end was an ambiguous cheat, let's all dance into the surf.

Perhaps one has to have their rosecolored Aussie glasses on to love this one, but from over the water, it was a complete waste of time.

reply

I resent the implication that any Australian who says they like or love this film is only doing so out of some ridiculous notion of patriotic duty. I love this film on its own merits, not because I am aussie. There are some aussie films that I don't think have anything to redeem them at all, its not as though aussies love every australian film. Far from it, in fact.

There were absolutely no plot holes in this film whatsoever, everything had been explained by the end. Little Fish is told with a great deal of subtlety, sadly you were unable to decipher the film's meaning. The beach scene at the very end was not the entire ending, the scenes prior to that are also relevant, and there was nothing ambiguous about it.

And by the way, Lionel was not simply some "old druggie". He had been Tracy's stepfather for many years before he ever became a junkie and before offering Tracy herself heroin. A relationship akin to that between father and daughter developed between them, Tracy had ties to Lionel aside from the fact of their mutual drug addiction.

hey redheadwoman i agree and i'm a pom :0)

whilst watching this i decided that cate blanchett is probably one of my favourite actresses. i also thought that this film (8/10) is also one of a large number of films that i watch and enjoy that i KNOW for a fact about 90% of the population of the UK (townsendabbott being one of them) would say is "crap".

"crap" because it took too much effort to watch. the storyline took to much thinking about, the emotions too difficult to compartmentalize, there were no CGI SFX, there was no top ten hit single from the soundtrack, no car crashes, high speed chases, not enough T n A etc etc

the ending was not ambiguous and as i recall there was no dancing in the surf ending, which i take it mkarl2 was insinuating was a cop-out "happy ending". they took her step dad to see the ocean one last time and recreated one of the happiest memories she had as a child. the memory that seemed to give her strength through her tough times "off" the dope.

films like this take more of a commitment from the viewer than the 2 hours it takes to simply slump on a couch in front of a tv. they are emotional exercise and i love them for it. the emotionally flabby however will always hate exercise.

Way to miss the point mate.

That remark about having to be from Australia to enjoy this movie is just plain stupid. I'm from the Netherlands and I thought it was a great film.

reply

those aren't plot holes, that's real life. people are like that in real life. it's ironic that you chose to exemplify with the quote "but this is the last time" which is, in itself, really heartbreaking. if, of course, you care enough about the movie to pay attention to it.

it wasn't slow, it was just right. and in my opinion cate blanchette is the greatest actress alive. for example, just look at her face while she accepts the flowers from jonny (that was his name, right?).

i gave it an 8 but make no mistake, by imdb standards 6,9 (or 6,6 at the present time) isn't really that bad. the best movie on here sports a 9 so that sais a lot.

reply

*snore* good acting, but just plain boring, i eventually just had to fast forward to the end, this film dragged and dragged, if you want to watch a better movie about the perils of drug addiction watch Requiem For A Dream.

reply

I enjoyed it very much. It always make me laugh a bit when people rip a movie because they do not like or get it. The way you react to this and most movies is what road you traveled before you saw the movie.
I watch movies regularly with a couple I have know for years. before we met we had very different pasts, very different. They could not get through ten minutes of Trainspotting or Fear and Loathing in Les Vegas and I enjoyed it a lot.

There are people like these characters I used to deal with people like some of them. There does not have to be a Rocky in every movie

reply

I pretty much agree with this, though I will say that Tracy kept lying about getting the loan because of pride I imagine.

But yeah, I couldn't give a rat's arse about any character. It just felt like Home and Away set in a different location and a whole lot of *beep*

This movie doesnt deserve a better rating...thats for sure. One imdb member had said it before:

Showing drug deals and criminal actions has never been filmed so boring.... The characters were boring too , the whole story was very disappointing but the performances of the actors were great but didnt save the movie for me.
This film wasnt moving, wasnt exciting, and Im sure it is more a worse drama because as a viewer of the movie I didnt care a lot about the characters (they sucked, except Hugo Weavings figure)and this isnt a positive aspect...

Whats about "House of sand and fog" (with Ben Kingsley)? This is one drama with conflicts between people, with a great performance and with lots of moving moments. Have a look at the rating and THIS movie deserves more than 6,9 (and got it ^^) and not "Little Fish"...

My rating for "Little Fish" is 3/10 , I´m sorry.

reply

House of Sand and Fog is 10/10.

But hey! Just saw Little Fish. Thought it was an honest drama, well acted and directed, got me interested in what was going to happen, no EFX, no CGI, a nice plot, not boringly linear, everything I expect from a good film. I'd give it at least an 8.

I'm ready to listen. Are you ready to think?

Don't even try to discuss it with people that thinks this movie deserves less than, let's say,5.

They think so because they're ignorant, and ignorant people
can't change their minds.

Look at all the 1/10.
Can you even consider talking to the kind of people who does that?

reply

Hi Felipe,

of course a rating 1/10 doesnt make sense, but I really didnt like that drama. So we all have different views of a movie, so may everybody rate a movie how he or she wants to.
By the way I tried to explain why I didnt like that movie at all and Im still that opinion.
Sure it has some positive aspects like Weavings acting, but the story was boring and I was very disappointing about the whole movie.

So, you are also one of those ignorent people who doesnt accept other meanings. There is a difference between discussing and arguing.

That means people who rated this movie with 5 or less points ARENT ignorent, NO, they didnt LIKE that movie, got it?

My favourite movie is "Shawshank Redemption" and there are also some people who rated it with less than 5 points, but I dont care about that, maybe they didnt like the story and thats ok.

Learn to be more tolerant!

I dont get something here. Why should we try to learn tolerate foolshiness and stupidity?

This is a work of genius.

This filmaker was brave enough to let his characters truly live and give them time to breathe, which is why this is above all else a film about the human condition. From reading this board it seems like some people saw it was a film about drug dealing and wanted some high-action flick which this isn't because it is a realistic drama. It's rare to see such brace performances - the best of which was by Hugo Weaving. These performances are what actors should aspire to.

reply

I agree, i really liked the film and it's great to see Aussies acting without the american crap around them. I think if you're expecting a car chase, drug dealing shoot-outs, etc then you'd be dissapointed but for a movie with a plot and complex relationships i think it's one of the better aussie films in recent years and one of the better films i've seen. I didn't think there were massive plot issues - the Hugo Weaving character and the complexities of just his relationship with other ppl was well done.

I try to support aussie films cos i think we should have our stories out there and while not a big deal for the film the multicultural aspect and sth-west sydney angle i loved cos it's familiar and non-americanised. But i wouldn't say i liked a movie just cos it's an aussie film. Little Fish just required you to have more than a passing interest in what's happening on screen. Whereas other films you can kinda flick through channels or doze off and you know exactly what's coming up, this needed a little more commitment.

I'd give it 7.4.

"Screw you guys, I'm going home!"

reply

I'd give it a 5.0, really boring movie, well acted, but boring an uninteresting.

reply

A brilliant film, one of my favourites of 2005.

reply

Gosh if you think it's boring you must been incredibly impatient, i feel bad for you guys if you can't sit through this and not get bored i don't get how you'd be able to sit through classics like maltese falcon or on the waterfront not every great film needs to be fast paced

Dignam: Pfft! What's the matter, smartass, you don't know any *beep* Shakespeare?

reply

And now it's 6.6. This is pitiful. This is a masterpiece of a movie.

reply

People are restless and impatient. If there isn't a car crash or an explosion or bare breasts every few minutes, they just tune out. I blame mindlessly gory horror films like Saw and Hostel, and their "comedy" equivalents like American Pie and Scary Movie.

reply

Well your definately wrong there with me. I loathe those types of movies, I don't need constant action, but you need something. There really was no story with "Little Fish." Requiem For A Dream is a much better movie of this genre.

reply

I agree. Boring meandering nonsense. I'm very tolerant of slow paced dramas, and I love many, but this was ridiculously overrated. Same with "Candy" as well, yet ANOTHER Oz-filmed heroin tinged dreary mess. I still respect Noni Hazlehurst though, quite obviously the best thing about both of these movies.

What the hell was with the ending here? The children's choir singing Flame Trees...is this supposed to be emotional at all? Excuse me while I gag.

reply

I didn't like Requiem for a Dream at all. I think it crossed a certain line from being genuinely harrowing into being gratuitously ugly, sadistic and exploitative, and the flashy camerawork and editing made me nauseous. I don't like Darren Aronofsky in general though.

reply

The fact that you found it gratuitously ugly, sadistic, and exploitative means you got the point though. No movie has every brought out so many emotions in me. I still feel waves of feelings everytime I think about that film.

reply

I never could quite put my finger on why I didn't like that film more. Your comments have hit the proverbial nail on the head. Though i absolutely detested pi which can be seen to be all good camera work and soundtrack and no substance.

reply

Yeh I agree, quite possibly one of the most exquisite films I've ever seen. I love how Tracy (Blanchett) is always 'tasting' her environment; constantly touching and looking at the things around her. An incredibly arresting film, even after watching it twice now, I find myself almost entranced by the long shot length and brilliantly constructed 3rd-act climax.

The subtlety of Hugo Weaving and Sam Neil's gay relationship added so much texture to the film, with the final scene in the caravan being particularly resonant.

I found the cinematography reminiscent of the photography of Bill Henson (also found in Somersault), it really accentuated Blanchett's beauty as she wandered through this filmic landscape.

9.5/10

~Amazing~

reply

I fully agree with edmajor. I loved Little Fish in exactly the same way. It is a very sensual, dreamy, atmospheric film. I loved the moody cinematography and the gritty urban feel, the way they caught the rather seedy and dangerous vibe of Little Saigon.

Hugo Weaving's performance was a big revelation to me. Cate Blanchett both gave a brilliant performance and also has never looked lovelier or more natural, even though she's playing a reformed junkie.

This is an excellent film.
