Possibly one of the worst films of the year

This is like a prolonged episode of Neighbours.Incredibly Dull and slow paced. The animation gives a little lift in places but ultimately this film is as dry as the climate it was filmed in. Avoid!

reply

Really? Do you actually watch Neighbours? Your credibility is shot right there, I'm afraid.

reply

So you're actually saying you've never even caught 5mins of an episode when flicking through day time Tv? I don't watch the show but yeah ive seen an episode or 2. How many years has it been running for!?? It would be like someone saying they've never seen an episode of the Simpsons......
Honesty is more credible than anything........

reply

Um, yeah. I don't even watch the channel that it's on.

I like honesty too. I find your post about this film bordering on the absurd.

reply

Basically everything.

Plus, I have a confession. I lied. It was unintentional though. I do watch Channel 10. Only on weekends, for the footy. Please forgive me.

Thanks. No I didn't find it slow paced. When I saw it at the cinema, at a packed house as well, which is fairly rare in Adelaide, nobody left. We laughed, we cried. I guess you've never had to deal with loved ones with cancer. With sickness and death.

Irreverent? Sorry, I don't know you and I apologise.

I really can't see why someone with those experiences wouldn't appreciate this film. Did you watch it until the end or did you walk out with the others?

Hmmm. I know what irreverent means. I didn't think that I was being so. But you thought so, therefore I apologised.

To say that this was possibly one of the worse films of the year and not even see it to the end is kinda odd in my opinion. Because the last part shows how it all ties together. It builds. You really missed the best part. Although, I didn't find any of it slow OR boring.

I'm not going to describe it for you mainly because I really couldn't do it justice. If you are interested, you really should watch it again.

Maybe no matter how eclectic your taste is it's just not your sort of film. For example, I found The Girl With The Pearl Earring extremely slow. Other people just love it.

I haven't seen Garden State.

reply

I didn't like the film either and I think that the ending was one of the worst parts!! It tried to be all deep and meaningful but it didn't show any insight into its subject matter, it WAS pretty and thought provoking but it copped out! All the way through was worry and doom and gloom then the ending was 'but everything turns out fine in the end'! It completely avoided actually dealing with any of the issues.

reply

Hey, you need to read the other thread dealing with the ending. This thread's theme was about NOT watching the entire film.

Pluto is now too small to be a planet.

reply

Yup, I've always said, if you don't actually bother to watch the film (whole film) then you haven't really got a leg to stand on when you criticise it.

Go back, actually watch the film, then you're qualified to give us an opinion.

I thought it was about middling. It wasn't the best film I've ever seen, but I did enjoy parts of it.

Some parts of it were very irreverent

reply

I liked it a lot. I bought the DVD. I don't have a problem with people NOT liking it. The original poster watched part of it and then had the audacity to compare it with a Australian soapy.

PS: You should've replied to her really, not me. She's the one that needs to watch it through.

Pluto is now too small to be a planet.

reply

You're right, I should have replied to her, but I tend to just reply to the last person who's posted. Quite lazy of me really.

reply

It would seem so. But never mind I doubt that she'd be back even if you replied to her.

reply

Yeah, probably too busy watching neighbours...

reply

Good one.

reply

Wha? Why does someone have to have someone they know die of cancer to appreciate this movie? I didn't like this movie very much- it just seemed like incoherent dribble put together half-competently by a woman with half an idea what a good movie is. I could make a better movie than this.

reply

I didn't say that. I suspect that I relate more to it because I have.

"I could make a better movie than this."

Sure you could.

reply

Just wait...

reply

Okay. But I won't hold my breath.

When do you start shooting?

reply

Oy. Movies take years and I'm only 16. I'm not going to hurry anything for you or anyone else.

reply

"I'm not going to hurry anything for you or anyone else."

Not even me?

reply

Hey- you ain't bad after all. I had you figured for another troll ready to poo-poo on my goals.

reply

Thanks.

I'm not a troll. I don't poo-poo anyones ideas or goals. I just happen to love this film.

Good luck young person!

reply

Personally I thought it was a nice film. Certainly not groundbreaking and WOW OMG, but still very nice. I liked the humour, and I like Justine Clarke.

reply

YOU ARE WRONG!!!

Not that you can't have an opinion, just that your opinion is FLAT OUT, CATEGORICALLY WRONG!!!

LOOK BOTH WAYS was one of the best films I've seen recently, with terrific animation and nice character studies. The ending, by the way, not a cop-out as has been previously said!

reply

Hey, why are you saying I am wrong? All my posts have said how much I enjoyed this film.

Why don't you *respond* to the person who started this thread?

The Yabbies..the handsomest team in the league.

reply

I haven't lost anyone to cancer or the like, but i still enjoyed the movie heaps. It just depends on wether the viewers has a heart or not.

reply

Relax man the movie blows

reply

"Dull and slow paced"

Well, um, no. Slow, yes. It´s really the point of this movie to be thoughtful.
Dull, well. That´s just wrong.

reply

One of the worst films of the year? What nonsense...for you maybe this film wasn´t great...to me was one of the best of this year...

reply

I didn't like it.
I felt nothing for the characters except at a rare instance when they pondered their pasts. Otherwise, I felt it was a long, dull view into (excuse me, but) ugly lives of uninteresting people. I originally thought that the cartoon deaths would really make this picture worth viewing, but there weren't even enough of those.
Subliminal shots were all that really caught my attention.

reply

I enjoyed the film. I'm not sure if it succeeded in what it was trying to do - but then I can't comment on that, not being the filmmaker. I'd commend it for not resorting to shock tactics in order to stir emotion in the viewer. I felt moved by it without having to witness death in the film. It was enough that the characters feared death and were lonely etc. Because the lead actors were believable, I invested in the film and rooted for them.

I don't think it was dull. Personally, films don't have to be plot driven and fast paced to strike a cord. I liked how it was character based.

reply

Agreed with that

reply

I thought it was a brilliant and touching film. Critics who can't do themselves generally carp, but they should really put down the crack pipe and get a life.

reply

THis film was great. The story everyone could empathise with, and the taboo subject matter of death was a real thought evoking one. Maybe your just scared of death. It was a film based on people's perceptions, how you look at different situations compared to others. If you didn't like it, you shouldn't have expected some action packed violent frenzy of killing and chaos. If you think about what you are watching, it then becomes highly enjoyable.

Do not speak- unless it improves on silence.

*beep* i agree, *beep* film ever. is there a point to this movie?

reply

absolutely no way it would have been the worst film of the year. this film is beautifully shot, has an amazing script (which has now been picked to be studied in schools), solid acting and genuine emotion. of course it's not going to be everybody's cup of tea but this film is trying to be as genuine as possible. it is about life.. real life and unfortunately in real life there isn't action going on every five minits and things don't move at a fast pace the whole time. i found this to be a really good film. an excellent study of human emotion. it has it's shakey points but no film is perfect in my opinion.

reply

I've studied it for school. I would definitely not call it 'worst film ever' or anything. It's got a lot more to it than 'look, lets shoot that guys head off'. The characters intertwine superbly - the pool scene, that's actually Andy's daughter in the pool! The imagery and symbolism is superb - basically everything has an extra little meaning. You've relaly got to sit down and watch this without distraction.

reply

"Incredibly Dull and slow paced."? Well, maybe compared to an action flick.
But for a sensitive exploration of the challenges of loss, death, and connections between human beings that I immediately care about...?
I found it a vibrant breath of fresh (non-Hollywood) air. Thank you Aussies !
