Weird....

You know, its really weird when a movie is set near where you live or have been. I know it doesn't mean anything to people who live in LA or New York (or even sydney for that matter). But i'm an Australian rural hick and i was AT jindabyne only a few weeks ago... I can't believe there is going to be a movie set there.

The movie is finished filming - it started filming on March 7 and ended in April.

I know, eh. There was some other movie set in Canberra, I think it was called 'Somersault', I dunno, but Mum watched it and she had tears in her eyes from seeing all the familiar places. "Wow, I've used that telephone box before," "I used to live near there," "They did a terrible job of disguising Belconnen Mall," It went on for ages!

I don't live in Canberra anymore but my school has organised a merit excursion to Jindabyne! I thought it would be lovely because there aren't many people going ($1000 can be a lot for some) so it'd be nice and quiet, but now I find they're filming a movie there! I hope to see something of it, but I might just be getting my hopes up.

Actually, in Somesault the central character stays in Jindabyne too.

i no, that really is wierd. i personally dont live in Jindabyne, but my holiday house is in Kalkite and i have friends and Family that live in Jindabyne. i can't wait to see the movie and see what's in it.

as i was raised in the ACT after coming to Oz from spazzo land ( the USA )in the Seventies. was 10 yrs old.

and lived and learned to drive around Cooma Berridale Adaminaby and Jindabyne in the 80"s

this equipped me for all weather driving from black ice/ blizzards for usa/europe to hot weather for africa to monsoonals for South america. i owe a lot to the High country and its gotten into the blood.Im now back in Oz and in Newcastle I plan to get back there soon .

a ghost story is SO appropriate as so many people disappeared in the snowy mountains scheme, and at time has that spooky feel at dawn and dusk.

and with the township of Joadja almost wiped out in the gold rush times with cholera there is a gruesome vibe that they will tap in to i hope.

as far as movies made in the area the Race track was used at Adaminaby to film "PHARLAP" so about time the world looked up there again.

And worth a stop as the township was moved in the fifties, and remains unspoilt since. all the towns featured are still in place and functional, except for Joadja whch was closed down in 79 due to a national park resuming the land.Only the old court house/ski chalet/ genstore/ road works depot remains standing and abandoned. However, the Cemetery is marked out clearly though and can be visited in the summer, (also in the winter but the snow, snow yes they get snow! will make things uncomfortable)

will be watching with interest

I'm excited! You're right, it *is* weird. I live in suburban Sydney but I go down to Jindabyne every year for skiing. And my friend has family that she visits every holiday in Jindabyne so she'll be super excited! Yayness!

Nobody cares what you think davelaw623

It's weird when your local area becomes 'famous' or is suddenly interesting to total strangers. And it is fun if you can pick the location, which you can do in Aussie films. I mean US UK films are either all in studios or 'big city', because they all look the same nothing look interesting

I'll probably wait til it comes out on DVD....

Being a Cooma girl who had rellies living in Jindabyne for most of my childhood I guess I'm curious to see the movie.

However, having said that, I am definitely NOT a fan of the town itself anymore. In my opinion it's a city try-hard (that fails miserably) and members of it's community are too big for their boots.

It's weird to me too, to think that the sleepy litlle town we used to stay over on the way to the snow (when I was a little kind and when we needed to stop over in the middle of a 6 hour drive) is now a film that has well known international actors like Gabriel Byrne (from my favourite few movies, The Usual Suspects, Enemy of the State and others), Laura Linney (Who I haven't seen in much, but she greatly impressed me with her performance in "The Exorcism of Emily Rose") and great local actors, such as John Howard and Deborah Lee Furness. I just can't believe that with Australia as the location for filming, the film was released far in advance in the USA. That annoys me so much that that happens.

Anyway, Can't wait. It comes out in cinemas next month, now.

Just because it is not a very well known place and Sydney is doesn't mean everything has to be set in Sydney, and it is a beautiful place you prob haven't even been there so how would know? GEEZ
