dead people

At the beginning of this movie a caution was displayed on the screen, along the lines of: "This film has depictions of deceased persons, which might be distressing to Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders."

What's that all about? Are aboriginals distressed by depictions of dead people? I've seen lots of movies which depict dead people and never seen that notice before. So it must only be depictions of deceased fellow aboriginals that distress them - not whities.

A friend of mine who lives in Sydney was able to go to an advance screening of the movie and she received a "press kit" which was a book talking about different aspects of the movie, interviews with the stars, etc, which she had sent to me as a gift. In the book it was talking about how the movie company had wanted to go through the right channels so as to depict the "smoking" scene(I think that's what it's called, I don't have the book in front of me) correctly. Suddenly the production company found themselves in hot water with the Aboriginals because they could not believe that someone had died and they were not informed about it. They first demanded to know when this death had occurred and how, etc. The production company then had to go to greath lengths to explain to them that there was not actually a death that it was "pretend" and a "movie". Ray Lawrence could not believe that so so trouble would erupt because they could not understand that. Anyway, perhaps, the production company was trying to prevent any further upsets that might occur due to misunderstandings and prevent any trauma to anybody sensitive to the situation depicted on screen.

In any movie or TV show where Aborigines who are deceased this warning is shown. I can't believe that an Australian would never had seen this warning before.

Sure a dictatorship would be easier - Dubya

It's against Aboriginal customs to see depictions of their deceased, fictional or otherwise. The warning appears quite regularly on ABC news.

The IMDb board for "The Proposition" has this discussion too and is worth a look.

The tv documentary video which the children were watching earlier in the film, when they were at school, could have been part of it. those people sure looked old, so they might be dead by know.

It also allows for the fact the Jindabyne will still be available after some of the older Aboriginal actors are dead.
