Gabriel Byrne dying his hair

What was the point of this? I reckon he just wanted to do it in real life during the shooting of the movie so they had to work it in somehow. It was remarked upon twice straight away but that was it, no other point to it as far as I could tell. If anything, he was the kind of guy who would welcome the grey hair.
