Anybody remember 'shortcuts'

Is it me or is this plot taken directly from one of the scenarios in 1993's "Shortcuts"

So much for their claim to be an "original" story.

Thank you! I was just about to post this. This plots seems like a complete rip-off of Robert Altman's "Short Cuts."

both films are based on raymond carver stories.

i haven't seen jindabyne, but i think the story was dealt with perfectly in the short amount of screen time it had, when it played out in short cuts.

can anyone who has seen both films say if jindabyne was worth it?

For more information about both subjects brought up in this thread there are several other posts on this board about both. Most articles about the movie when it was about to be released talked about the fact this was a Raymond Carver short story and had basically been done in Robert Altman's Shortcuts. As far as if one is better than the other most people seem to like Jindabyne better. I really liked Jindabyne(got to see it at the Toronto Film Festival in September '06 where Gabriel Byne and Laura Linney appeared at the screening)but I have not seen the other movie even though it was just on the Independent Film Channel. As I have read all the posts on this board I find that most people either loved this movie or hated it. It was rare that anyone had a so-so attitude about it.

Heck no. They stretch it so much, that the 20 Page story could get into a 2 Hour Movie. They even got rid of some of the greatness of the short story. It's also very boring. Shortcuts is a lot better.

hey, I was about to post about this ! The short story was already used as a segment of Altman's "Short Cuts". I wouldn't bother to take a look at Jindabyne were it not for the fact that it is directed by the guy who made Lantana, which was a terrific movie.

Yes! Worth it! It's two different artists separately interpreting a work of literature. While some of the language and scenes repeat, as well as the mood, the ultimate interpretation is different.

Wouldn't you see different adaptations of classic literature?

Yes. Shortcuts is actually funny, taking a darkly amusing spin on the story, whereas this film is devoid of humor.

Oh, thank you! It has been doing my head in where I have seen this scenario before, Shortcuts, of course. The blurbs for Jindabyne don't mention it at all and I was starting to think I was imagining having seen it before. I could see the actor, the girls in the water - I thought it was some weirdo deja vu thing!

Saw this today. Jindabyne is generally a good movie, with some good scenes and a typically great central performance by Linney, but it doesn't compare favorably with Altman's much shorter version in Short Cuts. I'd have to watch Short Cuts again before I'd be willing to make any kind of in-depth analysis, but there are several scenes that exist in both filmed versions and in those scenes Jindabyne is not significantly different from its predecessor. It's like watching the same film over again with new actors; it's like watching a cover band do one of your favorite songs. The additional material doesn't add up to much. The political/racism subtext is heavy-handed and obvious, and I think it works against the original story, where indifference and cruelty seem like universal problems.

I've seen some people complain about the photography (all in natural light), but that is actually one of the film's true charms.

Somehow I doubt we'll be talking about this one in a year...

Jindabyne was ponderous, worthy, overstretched. Short Cuts was a delight. The short story is better than either.

My tuppence.

What "claim to be an original story"? The credits clearly acknowledge Raymond Carver's "So Much Water So Close to Home", and presumably Ray Lawrence had the rights to it so you can't call it a ripoff of anything.

And for the record, as great as Short Cuts was, Altman's version of the story doesn't go into Claire's backstory enough, and I think Jindabyne is the better adaptation for that reason.
