I got the impression that her bad behaviour was her way of dealing with her mother's death.

She WAS very creepy. I just thought she had issues regarding her mother's death. That girl is going to need professional help. And soon!

I don't think her intention was to let the boy drown. And even after she saw him struggle, I don't think she realized how dangerous that was. I think she really thought she was helping him learn to swim. Good thing he didn't drown. She would probably never recover from that.

I think the aboriginal memorial was meant to give her some closure

I don't know. I thought maybe because he hit her with a ball at that barbeque accidently and underlying racial issues.

I don't think she was intentionally portrayed as a demon child. Instead, she is just a child with issues but she becomes important because her relationship with the white boy is used as a metaphor about the state of race relations in that town.

Her grandmother barely tolerates her and why is that? is it anger & grief over the death of the girls mother or unresolved anger about the girl's mother having a child with a "black".

then there's the swimming scene - it's NOT payback for getting smacked in the face at the picnic - she merely treats TImmy like another aboriginal child. She doesn't come to his recue because she wants him to start to swim. She knows he can. She would have jumped in if he really had been in trouble. Note that when she does join him in the water, Timmny is thrilled to have overcome his fears and swam for the first time. it's the racist grandmother who assume ill intentions. When Tim tells his Mom what happened that day, he doesn't say I almost dorwned - he says "I swam!" with happiness.

One of the themes of the movies is
Ambiguous Motives
and that we don't know what is in someone's heart.

She and Tom were good friends. Maybe she was confident that her maneuver would get him to swim (which it did), and knew all along that she was consciously deliberately teaching him to swim. (pure friendship)

Maybe she had a dark morbid streak and partly wanted him to drown but when it looked like he really might, she rescued him. (need to control death)

Maybe both, or neither, or both plus other stuff mixed in.

Maybe she was living up to the community's expectation that she is a broken disturbed child.

All creepy little demon children are bad. It's not in their nature to be good. Christ look at that Damien travesty. Now THERE is a problem child.

And by their very nature, children naturally are demons.

They exit the demon stage when they become adults and then transition to the moron phase. Instead of "almost drowning" a playmate, they actually shoot and kill other people intentionally and all sorts of other mayhem too intense to be detailed here. After all, this is imdb - not the Military Times.
PG13 not XXXXXX TVMA RRR etc.

These are some insightful and some hilarious posts! :D:D:D I busted out laughing when I saw the title of this thread because I thought the same thing: that little girl is bound to grow up and harm people. She appears to be an accident waiting to happen.
