Australian creepiness

From what I've seen of Australian cinema, I have to say that it corners the market on kitchen-sink creepiness. Sure, the Japanese do creepy horror really well, but the Australians create this really bleak, creepy vibe in their dramas. Frog Dreaming, Picnic at Hanging Rock, Somersault, Wolf Creek, Snowtown, and this are all deeply unsettling.

Thank God they also make movies like Kenny or I'd think Australia is far too scary a place to visit!

Interesting post. I totally agree. There is also something strange and hallucinatory about the Australian landscape, flora and fauna. On top of this there is the aboriginal culture and folklore which is to westerners ,rather alien. Then there is the history of genocides and racial tensions. And some of Australia's recent crime history is shocking. It can look like America or Europe and they speak English, but it is completely different.
