Question about blue car (SPOILERS)

the killer had his victims car hidden. at one point he was looking at it and then removed a red "P" plate smiling. what was that about ? i first thought he was gonna plant it somewhere to put the blame on one of the 4 guys

I think it was to reinforce how young this girl was...make the crime more shocking I suppose.
Or that's the impression I got when we picked the film apart for an english class..

This doesn't answer the question as to what does the "P" mean. Student driver? Pubescent driver? Pretty driver?

reply

In Australia a 'learner' driver must display a yellow "L" plate and they must be accompanied by a 'fully licenced' driver until they have passed their final driving test. After they have passed the final exam they are given a 'probationary' licence and they must display a "P" plate.

"P" Plate drivers are allowed to drive on their own but some restrictions still apply. The restrictions vary from state to state but in most cases the "P" plate only has to be displayed for 6 months. As long as the driver hasn't committed any serious driving offences after this amount of time has passed the driver is given a "full" licence.

The implication in Jindabyne is that the girl has recently passed her final driving test and so she would have been about 17 years old.

Well explained, Vordhosbn.

But I think from now on, i'm going to tell people it does stand for pretty driver! Lol.

Explains why the killer hassled Claire but let her go. He thought she was pretty but she didn't have the P plate to prove it.

reply

It means she's a provision driver. She has no 'points' to lose if she breaks the law.
