Children of Henry VIII

Has anyone forgotten that Henry had four children: Queen Mary I, Queen Elizabeth I, King Edward VI and Henry Fitzroy? How about making a movie out of the book "Children of Henry VIII".

P.S.: There's also a book entitled "Innocent Traitor" a novel of Lady Jane Grey's life from the moment she was born until her execution.

Lol; I don't think we can be accused of ‘forgetting’ Elizabeth I! They are numerous productions on her life; some fantastic, and some recent disappointing dramas.

However Mary I and Edward VI are generally overlooked and a production on them would be great. There is a recent independent film on the life of Mary Tudor – “The Twisted Tale of Bloody Mary” (2008) – but personally I found it very disappointing and would not recommend it.

Was Henry Fitzroy the child born at the beginning of the child to one of Henry's misstresses? If so did he ever have any time on the throne?

reply

Born during his marriage to Catherine of Aragon.
Died during his marriage to Anne Boleyn.

Fitzroy died just after Anne Boleyn - in fact he even attended her execution. He survived her by less than two months.

I think he had a few more than four. Henry Fitzroy was his first son, so that's why so much was made of him. But a man who was as sexually rampant as Henry in the times of no prophylactics is gonna have a veritable army of kids.

I'm anespeptic, frasmotic, even compunctuous to have caused you such pericumbobulations...

Is it possible as Henry VIII got older he became less potent in that respect?

Yes, but he was hardly a one-girl man for the first 20 yers of his marriage to Katherine of Aragon. It was well known that he had huge numbers of affairs with the female courtiers.

I don't think that's well known or even true.

Consider the daffodil. And while you're doing that, I'll be over here, looking through your stuff

reply

Sorry, but it is.

You smell homeless, Brett. Homeless.

He's only known to have 2 mistresses so cite how it's "well known" he had so many more.

No, Henry wasn't as promiscuous as people would think. He was really in love with Katherine of Aragon for a while. He did have an affair with Bessie Blount, the mother of his son Henry Fitzroy. Also there was Mary Boleyn but not that many. Then he was loyal to Anne during their relationship together. Then he married Jane Seymour and he mourned her for about 3 years when she died. While he was married to Anne of Cleves he did engage in a relationship with Catherine Howard but I think by that time he was impotent.

Uh, no, it's not actually. You need to cite your sources before asserting as "true" something that most historians do not support. Henry flirted quite a bit and definitely stepped out on his wives from time to time. But in a court as tight and political as Henry's was, all eyes were on anyone who might interest him, since they were potential vectors of influence--therefore every mistress, dalliance, flirtation was documented. There simply were not that many. *Certainly* not "huge numbers," and nothing compared to his fellow monarchs.

I'm currently reading a book titled "The Mistresses and Bastards of Henry VIII"..... there were numerous mistresses and children. Seems Henry was the type who loved being in love even if was overlapping.
