Why is this so popular and liked?

I saw this short movie around and I checked some information on it before seeing it, and saw that it won an oscar, so I decided to watch it.
I did and... nothing special?
Is it just me?

This film( to me anyways) was a bresh or fresh air in a world where claymation was no longer done, unless you consider "The Curse Of the WERE Rabbit" two years later. Even though the film is very cutesy, it is still filled with thematic material that everyone can relate to. Its also a story of endurance for such a humble underdog. It is filled with humor, and drama at the same time and doesnt present slapstick, gross out , or crude humor in the way that many comedies are today. It also gives something that hasnt been done that often these days, a moral at the end which I beleive not only ends the film beautifuly, but pulls everything together and makes it such a whonderful film. Every time the film comes on sundance I always finish it with a smile on my face as with all of the directors shorts.

It's a fantastic short and well worthy of an Oscar. Watch again - maybe you'll see something different.

Yes i hated it too.
its beautifully modeled in clay,
but the ad like story and content
was too corny to me.

Every character is so endearing. This film is executed with such profound simplicity, but behind every detail are solid and sometimes complex ideas.

There is certainly a "less is more" philosophy behind this film.

Despite all its depressing situations, there is accessible humor and humanity that is so strong, but, again, delivered with such simplicity.

The human condition expressed in black and white claymation. Pretty *beep* cool.

I absolutely loved this gem of a short film.....I fell in love with Adam's work after watching his recent film "Mary and Max"....both are brillant in my opinion!

Just saw it, LOVED it and the shorts (and am jumping Mary & Max to the top of my NFQ)... of course, I'm a sucker for such a darkly whimsical piece; so bittersweet, and the animation style was gorgeously done. Oh well, OP's loss.

Because it's beautifully done, full of heart and emotion, and often quite funny. Yes, as another noted, the "cutesy" buts can be a bit much, but as a whole, it's wonderful. I'm somewhat confused as to how anyone can hate a film so honest and vulnerable
