Response to James Avery's Take

James, thanks for writing such an eloquent take on this
enigmatic little movie. I have to say, your thoughts
echoed many of mine, and actually cleared up some things that
had been bogging me for this time. I had a similar reaction
when watching the picture, only to find on 2nd and 3rd viewings, everything seemed to make so much more sense..

Something I noticed which I didnt see you mention..

What do you take the significance of the CRUCIFIXES to be? Upon last viewing I counted no less than 15 crosses spread throughout the film..
I'm sure you picked up on this too but I dont really know what it means.. Even the poster on the IMDB page seems to suggest Christ like connections.....
I guess it could definitely be argued that the druggie character (Jeremy?) has some Christlike tendencies... If you look at the DVD chapter selections, there's a lot revealed in the text...
When Rachel and Sam come to Jeremy's apartment that scene is titled "Last Supper"

This is the kind of thing I love..
Debate and discussion.... too many of the Hollywood films you mentioned look down on the audience... but I think this movie works so well because like you said, its a different movie for everyone who watches it..

Anyway, your thoughts?
Peace and Serenity..

Hey Angie. Thanks for taking the time to read my extremely long winded post/rant about this movie. I'm glad other people are getting sick and tired of the tripe (thank you very much slyver!) that's being released into theatres nowadays. I mean, it's like they force-feed us so much crap and we still go because we have the attitude "well, there's nothing else worth seeing so I guess I'll see that." Can you imagine a world in which there are a plethora of amazing movies out there and people get extremely excited about their choices because they know that whatever movie they go to, it will be good. Siiigh. Hopefully the unoriginality that runs rampant in Hollywood will leave the back door open for fresh new filmmakers that actually have something to say. This is the main reason I'm so enamored with this film Expiration. It's different than what we've seen a million times before. Regarding the crucifix, I think you're on the right track about Jeremy being a Christ-like figure. It's difficult for me to talk too much in depth about it because I don't want to spoil the story for people who haven't seen it but his purpose in this film and to the characters is to open their eyes; to make them turn the mirror on themselves and figure out what is wrong with our lives. The sunrise scene on top of the roof is the point in the film where the characters finally wake up. They are all profoundly touched by what they have just witnessed. Sorry for being vague, Angela, but you know what I mean. I'm glad that you are taking an interest in this movie and I hope we can inspire people to at least give it a shot and bring more people into the discussion. Let me know what you think about it all and we'll continue this soon.
