Why such low ratings?

It's such a beautiful film with some amazing performances. Such a touching story on so many levels and the last scene in the elevator is just heartbreaking.

I was very surprised to see such low ratings for this movie here on imdb. But then again, I guess I should've gotten used to seeing such low ratings for good movies on imdb.
I guess people were expecting a scary horror movie, but the filmmakers approached the story more on a phsycological level. Which makes it a more interesting story I think.

its a good story but the movie just isn't very exciting. The conclusion of the movie didn't wow me so probably why it has a relativly "low" score , although as far as averages go 5.6 isnt that bad. i gave it a 6

as someone said in another thread, bad marketing. I thought it was brilliant.

I didn't think it was a touching story. I gave it a low rating because I thought it was nonsense. It wasn't scary or interesting nonsense either, just tedious throughout.

When I first watched it I didn't know it was a remake, so even though I loved the story I couldn't help feeling that there is something missing.
When I watched the original afterwards, this one just felt obsolete, not bad just not as well done. Something in the atmosphere didn't translate for me, so I gave this one a 5.

I'd hazard a guess that a lot of the people rating it have seen the original and (like myself) are sorely disappointed with this one. It just...lacks. I can't quite put my finger on some of the reasons I dislike it, but it's lacking a lot of the haunting quality, the scares and the acting talent that the original possesses.

Your idea of good isn't the same as my idea of good. I found it to be atrociously dull and without a point.

After I watched it the first time, I came to IMDB and rated it an "8". Then I read some of the reviews that really ripped the movie, and I thought I must have missed something. So I watched it again, and then gave it a "9". I think this is a great movie. Jennifer Connelly is phenomenal in this. I'm a parent, and watching her go through all this for a child she loves really hit me. The ending scene in the elevator chokes me up every time I see it.
My only guess is that in an era of slasher flicks and big budget CGI flicks, this one is too slow for a lot of viewers.

I agree with OP. I just saw this movie for the first time a couple of months ago, and enjoyed it. However, the reason I enjoyed it was because the story was ultimately about a mother's love for her daughter or lack thereof. I thought that was really the selling part of the movie for me, but if you were looking for this movie to be some scary paranormal movie then you would rate it very low. The movie was haunting, but not really scary. I guess you could compare it to the Sixth Sense in some ways, but it is not as good as that was.

I also really enjoyed the acting from Jennifer Connely and the little girl who played her daughter, and even the supporting actors like her ex-husband, the lawyer, the building owner, and attendant were very good. That being said, the movie takes a slow approach to getting to its ultimate end and some people might have lost interest in the movie as a result so rated it low.

This is a good movie to watch on cable tv or Netflix vs being some big box office promoted movie.
