Cannot believe how many on here talk about a crap ending...

(Spoilers)

I've read almost the whole board and I cannot coprehend some people.
They talk about bad ending, unfinished ending etc etc. If an ending is not "the good guy always wins/good wins evil" that doesn't mean it's not a good ending FCOL.

It's a great ENDING (as a film, definately not a nice one). It leaves people the "after-film" effect that these things are hapenning RIGHT NOW around the world. The people that wanted the bad guy caught are only trying to hide in their comfortable life ignoring what is really hapenning in other parts of the world or even theirs.

Sorry to be irritating but I cannot keep it inside me. Winnie the Pooh has great endnings...Avoid all real life endnigs...it might keep you awake for 2 extra minutes when you go to sleep at night...

great reply, Anthos. I completely agree. While I was slightly disturbed by the ending, I knew that the ending was perfect. I think it really captures the essence of the characters' ever-changing relationship. I think the fact that the ending causes one to think about the movie after it has been watched is a sign of a great ending, and perhaps a great film.

You are very right in stating that people just want to crawl back into their comfortable lives and believe that everything is ok. I have lived in one of the poorest parts of Honduras doing service, and that kind of suffering is very tangible once you are there. I become increasingly frustrated with people's ignorance toward other countries. But, believe me people, everything is not ok.

Good film. Fascinating yet disturbing ending. A good movie for everyone to see.

Either of you see the alternate ending on the DVD? There was some text before it that said it took away from the film, but I actually liked that ending better. It was sort of ironic.

This is one of my favorite movies, i saw it at sundance last year and a couple more times on dvd. I like the original ending (get the dvd if you haven't seen it) but the ending they ended up with is much better. so it's not a happy ending but it was so loaded with ruined relationships, pride, injustice, greed. no wonder people don't like it. it's hard to look at that stuff but that's reality

Couldn't agree more. I saw this film the other day, by a stroke of luck. I had never heard of it but stumbled over it in my local video store and since I'm learing Spanish I was on the lookout for something in Spanish and this one looked interesting, so...

And what an excellent surprise it turned out to be! Really good. As for the ending - it's frustrating and made me shout "nooooo" even though I was watching it alone. :-) But frustrating is not the same as bad, absolutely not. I just wished I had watched it with someone, 'cos I had noone to discuss it with...

Everything is fine! I was just swinging from a chandelier without a seat belt.

I never heard about this in Ecuador, damn im not Patriotic enough. The ending is really great though, stuff like this does happen in Ecuador, everyday but i never knew about the monster.

The ending was perfect, it said all it had to say. I watched the alternate ending and he made the right choice by not using it, it was too cliche. As opposed to getting physically beaten he will be mentally beaten for the rest of his life.

What was the Alternate Ending? I loved the one in the movie...very unseleting.

The Nameless

I am not what I am

I agree to the core. I wanted it to end the other way as a Viewer but once the movie ended the message was absolutely loud and clear. I am highly impressed with the movie and so here i am wanting to discuss with other people who have seen it.
Tragedies always make you think a bit or two after the movie.
the characters in the movie are shown much to resemble the real life characters with shades or good and bad.

also the true story the movie is somewhat based on isn't a "happy" ending either... the real guy served several years in prison in Ecuador for killing over 100 young girls... colombia and peru also wanted to try him for hundreds of murders in their countries as well, but couldn't afford to do so.. so at the end of his term in ecuador, he was taken to the colombian border and released and hasn't been heard from since...

and i'm glad the alternate ending wasn't used... Molona getting beat up might have given too much sympathy to a guy that obviously really just cared about his career

I totally agree. I thought the movie was grim but brave, especially the end - watching the journalist walk away, everyone thinking he's a hero, but the audience knows he's completely sold his soul - no redemption for him or his team, no redemption of the situation - American movies NEVER do that - Americans need the good guy to win and for all to be settled and tidy and right with the world. Of course that's "entertaining," but it doesn't hurt to stretch once in awhile and deal with the more uncomfortable reality of life. I wish more American/English-language movies were willing to do this.

I thought the movie was predictable and boring. The only interesting part was the accident in the car and the way it was done during and after that scene. Everything after that was pretty crappy. If you want a decent movie with a similar concept (vaguely) watch the Kevin Spacey movie, The Life of David Gale.

As for the last scene. I like the idea of it being simple and less than obvious... but I had to watch the scene three times because allI saw was a hut, and was wondering why nothing was going on with the hut. Then after the 2nd play I heard what might be panting, but again, wasn't sure enough to accept it was panting. If there was a whimper from the child or a more graphic sound maybe I coudl accept the boy was doing abused in one way or another, but as far as I can tell the monster could have been washing the floor or wiping his nose or something. Not at all chilling enough, and while It shouldn't be too obvious, it was far too vague.

Far overrated ending.

I did a couple of replays of the ending myself. Second go around I heard the panting and the buzzing of flies. And I assumed that was the hint of a corpse nearby..

Hm.
