Based on a true story(?)

The back of the case said this movie was based on actual events. So did a reporter actually free the "Monster" when he was trying to put him away?

There used to be two rapists in Ecuador: "The beast of the Andes" and a guy people used to call "El desdentado del Pichincha", but a long time ago.

I doubt this movie is based on actual events (although child abuse had become common in Ecuador in the last years), because no reporter has taken part in something like freeing a delinquent, at least the media hasn't brought that to the public.

I think this story was "inspired" by Luis Alfredo Garavito. He was one of several child serial killers from South America, such as the beast of the Andes (i.e. Pedro Lopez) referenced above.

However, Pedro killed mostly girls. Luis killed exclusively boys, just like the guy in the movie. He also maintained stable relationships with women like the guy in the movie. He was also fond of being very drunk while doing his thing, just like the guy in the movie.

I'm pretty sure this is the guy the movie is based upon.

However, in real life, there was nothing about a reporter letting him go. That was just for dramatic effect in the movie.

Here is a pretty good article about him:

If you want to read more about the beast, Pedro, here is a good article:

I actually first heard about the killer of the little girls on one of those Bill Kurtis hosted true crime documentary programs on basic cable about 4 years ago before this movie came out. Anyway, i don't know how old the actual program was or if there have been updates but at the time, it said that the killer had served his time, been deported to his native Colombia (i think) and then was released and dropped out of sight and may even be in the United States by now. Nothing had been heard from him at the time of the program was produced. Anybody know if this is still the case or if has turned up somewhere or is he behind bars again? creepy.....

From watching a A&E Biography of Pedro Lopez, they said when he disappeared after his release, there was a could have been a chance he been captured because of the bounty on his head for getting off lightly killing all those children
