Miike just a tad pretentious?

Did anyone else watch the special features? There was an interview with the director of this movie, Masato Tanno, and Takashi Miike, and Miike kept calling this film "simple" over and over again. He "praised" Tanno for having the courage to make a film with such a simple plot. I personally liked this movie much better than Miike's Ichi the Killer. He's just a pompous a**hole as far as I'm concerned.

Its funny you should say that. I just got done watching City of Lost Souls and thought to myself during the final "beach" scene "This Miike guy must be a real *beep* to work with because he's obviously a perfectionist."

I meant it as a compliment though. Frankly every one of his frames is a painting and some of his frames have made me cry (Green Fields Scene in DOA: Birds) and you have no taste in cinema or Japenese film for that matter if you don't at least appreciate this man's work.

You must have been interested enough to watch him supposedly behave like a jerk. So what, the guy is anal and truthful.

Being a Miike fanboy I'm hesitant to reply to this, but as one, I must.

The man makes an average of 4 films a year, all of which come out like *beep* diamonds. He's a perfectionist because all he has to do is tell the actors what to do. He makes complex films because he can.

"Koroshiya 1" is far more complex than "1-Ichi"... I don't think he was in the wrong for pointing it out. I loved the the prequal was so simplistic... made it just as enjoyable to watch for me.

Even if he is a bit full of himself, I think he deserves it.

I think if someone makes a prequel for a movie you directed you have the right to say whatever you want.

Calling a film "simple" isn't an insult. Miike is a film genius, he knows what he's talking about.

sometimes making a film 'simple' is much, much harder than creating a complicated one. Ichi the Killer was incredibly complex - you had so much going on and loads of 'blink and youll miss it' touches. i mean c'mon, just check out the ending to that film!

stripping that kind of information down and weaving a straight and simple narrative is a great success!

and i very much doubt miike is pompous in any shape or form - watching any of his films, particularly his early stuff will tell you that!

the man says he just does it because it's his job and claims super troopers to be his favorite movie ever... c'mon. he is one of the best directors around, even if he was pompous id give it to him. also, how does this impact his art in any way, shape or form?

reply

miike is a perfectionist - he's just trying to convince himself that he aint.

reply

Miike's favourite film is not SUPER TROOPERS, the lame comedy, but STARSHIP TROOPERS - the very violent and satirical movie by Paul Verhoeven.
