Aspect ratio

Doen anybody know what's the films' screening format.
This is realy important, I think I saw it screaned wrongly.
Should it be 2:35-1 ?

Quite amazing as it might sounds, the movie was shot with a common triCCD DVCam from Panasonic and is screened in Cinemascope. It's very unusual and it works very well. Great film indeed!

Indeed the film was shot with a Dvcam in 4/3 format, but Wenders just cut the edges of the screen to fit it in the Cinemascope format... He didn't used anamorphic images.

I wonder if this is a German thing... and no, it's not what it sounds like.

Example: Wolfgang Peterson shot Air Force 1 in 4x3 as well, but framed the film so that it could be cropped for 16x9 in theaters. I might be mistaken, but I believe the motivation for this method was so that, when the film was eventually shown on television, they could simply broadcast the "uncropped" 4x3 version instead of resorting to pan and scan (and all the issues involved).

Now, its typical for a lot of actors from Britain for example, to have a ton of theatrical training, since it's common for most of their screen actors to have their roots on the stage. Since both Wenders and Peterson are German directors, is it possible that this "cropped" 4x3 method is something typical to German TV productions?

1.85: no.
Cinemascope: yes

I worked a bit on the film and it was shot on a PAL DVX 100 which is a 4:3 camera framed for and cropped to scope 2.35 in post in post.

Since you worked in the film, do you know something more about postproduction?
because colors and photography are excellent, way more than you'd expect from a common AGdvx100.
is it just the transfer to film to make it look that good??

reply

16:9 for sure.
