what did Lana say? (*possible spoilers)

What did Lana say about the people who were cheering as the twin towers were hit? She said that they were just people and they cheered because "they hate us, they hate america". But she said something more that I didn't catch and I feel this may be key to understanding her opinion. Can anyone help me?

I just saw this film last night and I can't quote it verbatim, but here's a non-verbatim recap of what she said:

"They hate us, they hate America" her uncle responded "They're terrorists" and she said, "No, they are just ordinary people, but what they feel comes from a true & real place inside of them." And then she said something like "The death of 3,000 souls doesn't mean that we should kill more people in their names..." Again,I can't remember the dialogue verbatim, but I hope that is what you are looking for?

reply

Thanks.
I thought there was some more, because to me that didn't completely explain her point of view, but maybe I was looking where there was nothing to find =)

Lana: " i just heard people cheering"
Paul: "cheering?"
Lana: "there was a crowd gathered out in the street..."
Paul: "terrorists!"
Lana: "no, i think that's the part that hurts the most. they were just ordinary people"
Paul: "but why in the hell were they cheering"
Lana: "because they hate us. because they hate america. and it came from such an honest place and from so many people, that i just... i knew that something had gone wrong... and that has become my nightmare"
Paul: "over 3000 civilians were killed that day. they were innocent people!"
Lana: "ya, and it's their voices that i want to hear... because i really don't think that they would want anymore people killed in their name"

so i guess she wants to say that there must be a reason why people hate america, and that that might be the problem that should be solved. to eliminate the reason for the hatred and not to eliminate the people that hate.
An opinion which is very common outside of america, and probably wim wenders opinion as well.

reply

Not too common in, say... Iran?

reply

Sure. That's why the Iranian people had the first 'minute's silence' in the world (at a major football match in Tehran) and why the Iranians gave immediate permission for the US to overfly Iranian airspace in pursuit, if necessary, of the perps. Plus other assistance as required.

Some of you people are so quick to compain about generalisations when they are applied to you, but see no problem in dishing them out yourselves.

And mine as well.
Powerful little movie.

Lana says all of the above, but the sentiment is that the 3000+ dead would not want anyone else killed in their names. I understand your desire for more information to "understand her opinion", as I felt that Lana's character needed to be fleshed out a bit more. She didn't seem to have any significant conflict that needed to be resolved, while Paul had an overabundance of it. Still, for better or worse, I always enjoy a view through the looking glass at my own country.

Just saw this at Cinevegas last night (and yes, got Wim's autograph on my new "Until the End of The World" DVD from Germany! Thanks Wim! :) Moreover, Dennis Hopper was there in the theater to present Wim with the Cinevegas Vanguard Director Award. It was great to watch him and Wim banter a bit while smoking cigars. Plus, they both stayed and watched the movie with us! Saw Wim later at the after party at "Curve" at the Aladdin Hotel, but left him alone.

What's missing here is that she said (not verbatim) "that's what hurt the most, they were ordinary people and they were cheering." and something about huge crowds cheering because thay hate America. I just saw the film today at the Traverse City Film festival. It sits kind of heavy at times, but is well worth viewing.
