Ending - Spoiler

Just to clarify, Daniel did not die in the end, correct? That was actually him out in the field with his son and not a dream?

Also, why did Lena say that there would be a need to draw another angel after just finishing having had sex with Daniel for the first time?

reply

In my opinion he did die. The last picture was a metaphor for him making peace with his past (the little boy is Daniel as well).

About the new angel I had two theories: Maybe she thinks that Daniel deserves an angel or she wants a child with him. I prefer the first one.

reply

I agree, I really do think that he died and was at last content with his life. His life had been nothing but stress for such a long time and finally he just flew away, listening to those beautiful voices...

very well said :) Exactly what I thought aswell

Did he really dies? I personally don't think so. But that's just my opinion, my own interpretation of the ending. The director was clever enough for not to impose us a "happy ending", Hollywood-like with Daniel standing up when hearing the chorus, walking to them with blood covering his face and directing the chorus semi-dead. It doesn't falls neither into the sentimentalism of a certain dead after he hears the song.
I mean everybody can theorize about the right ending for them, but the truth is that it isn't clear if he dies or not. We decides if he is gone or if he survives in order to have a long happy life with Lena.
You choose.

Of course he dies!
No doubt about it. He stops breathing, it's obvious ( although Michael Nyqvist could not stop his aorta from pulsing... *g* ).
He embraces himself, the child that used to play the violin in the open fields. It resembles his source, his font (I don't know what he calls it in the english synchronisation) which he told the members of the choir to search for.
Its the ultimate gesture of affirming ones own existance!

Wow, someone from another country criticizing the USA with no provocation! I've never seen that on IMDB before! How original!

I don't think he died. Obviously people are supposed to believe that he died but as long as there's no clear evidence (i.e. a funeral) I just prefer to keep him alive in my mind. :-) Obviously, me opionion is wrong according to people who "know" stuff about movies but hey, who gives a heck!

My first thought when Lena said "jag har något roligt att berätta", after they'd slept together, I thought there was a baby on the way, and then she told him about the angel. Since I don't like the idea of them having a kid I prefer to think of Daniel as the new angel. This was also kinda mentioned before when Lena told Daniel that she could see his wings. And again, whenever something is up to the viewer I prefer to interpret stuff in the way that make me the most happy. :-)

reply

I totally agree. I am happy with the opportunity to interpret the ending in two ways. It feels obvious that he dies, but I don't want him to die because I do think it is a crappy ending. People always dies at the end of movies. That sucks.

I want him to live on, I don't want him to die! :-)

reply

It would be a crappy ending if they lived happily ever after.
He dies...it's obvious he stops breathing and he becomes very still and then joins his son in heaven. Can't be more obvious really....except when they did show a funeral, but the director thankfully didn't think that that was needed (maybe for some it was...). If you don't want people to die at the end, watch american romcoms.

reply

Of course, he died. He accidentally smacked his head and his head starts bleeding to death. He is alone in the restroom. There is no other way to interpret this.

reply

but Pollack is talking about a sequel now, does it mean that he survived?

reply

I am amazed to see some viewers thinking that Daniel did not die. As the first respondent pointed out, it is clear that the scenes in the cornfield are memories or thoughts and that the child being picked up is the young Daniel.

Surely the heavenly music coming down through the loudspeakers in the restroom are a pretty obvious allusion to his freedom to die because he had achieved his purpose on earth.

reply

You are right and most people don't agree -- he did NOT die at the end. The reference to drawing the angel was saying she was pregnant. And to everyone who asks how could she know? A woman can know, even the same night.

reply

Ofc he did. Watch his breathing. Also, his time was up, something he acknowledged himself near the end by telling his mentor he had finally fulfilled his dream.

That's why he was smiling, he died in utter happiness over completing his goal and journey in life.

A picture with a smile -- and perhaps, a tear.

Of course he died, and I don;t know that it is open to interpretation, only misinterpretation. The child he embraces in the field is himself as a child, the same field in which the movie opens, clutching the same violin he was playing as a child. He dies at peace with himself, having accomplished what he needed to accomplish in his life. We should all be so lucky as to die with such joy.

The angel to be added to classroom wall? That would be Daniel himself, not their child. Lena was a passionate young woman, not a mystical figure. Everyone in the movie is incredibly human. To say otherwise is to cut the heart out of the movie.
