First kissing scene!

How come Lena seems so shocked during the first kissing scene during the bicykle practice?
First Lena gives Daniel a kiss and a few moment afterwards Daniel responds with kissing her back. Lena looks very strange and her smile disappears.
How come? Later on in the movie she is definitly in love with him and it seems she was during the whole movie... but this kissing scene seemed akward....

She gives him a kiss? I thought it was Daniel who actually began kissing her. I don't know neither for sure why Lena looked so strange...but I guess maybe she was just surprised and perplex of the sudden "passionate" kiss? I mean, in the beginning of the movie, Daniel is more "cool". But didn't Lena say something like "Now everybody knows that I like you" (Nu vet alla att jag tycker om dig (?)) right after the kiss? Or maybe I'm at the wrong scene, but it was definitely at the bicycle practice. It's quite a long time ago I saw the movie :-)

(SPOILER) This is a finely written movie and her signs of shock is functional - it may be that she intuitively feels that their relationship is doomed because of him being a "music messiah".

Everybody interprets this scene differently I reckon. I thought she instantly felt the anxiety Daniel is going through when being with her. As we learn later in the movie, she had to endure a big disappointment concerning love matters. She felt that there was something not right about him. Only we know, that he suffers from cardiac insufficiency and he hesitates, because he fears to be not able to be there for her.

This is what I think too. I think she felt that he was afraid, holding back before.

I think SpeedyGonzales gave quite a good answer to your question, but I would like to add something..

I've always thought that the reason she i so shocked and pulls away is because his kiss is so forceful. The one she initiates is just a bit more than a peck and I took her reaction to mean that she didn't expect the brutality of the one he then gives her. While Daniel may have been with many women through his life, this is the first time it means anything, and because of that he doesn't quite know what to do with himself.

Those are good points.

In addition, or however, I think it's possibly because a lot of feeling wells up in her and all of a sudden she doesn't want to get hurt again like she did with the married doctor. The film has to give us several hints about that past situation before she spills the beans about it towards the end of the film. The hints are: Her sitting in the store crying when Daniel sees her for the very first time; her pulling away from the soulful kiss; her telling Daniel at the lake that he must not hurt her (or whatever she said, I can't remember exactly).

Anyway, just some thoughts.

I think you've got it wrong. It's the other way around.
Lena gives Daniel a kiss. A few seconds later Daniel kisses her back, but he quickly stops kissing her and backs off looking very troubled. That's when and why Lenas smile dissapears.
It's because of Daniels unexpected behaviour.

reply

Yes that is what I feel. Also he is worried about doing something wrong as Stig says...? or maybe that is later on? Anyway Daniel is hesitant....it seems a natural blossoming love feeling. So well done by all.
