'Shake It Up, Shake It Down...

move it in, move it 'round, Disco Lady!' Sing Florence Henderson, sing! I was 8 years-old.

The horror, the horror...

reply

Though I like her; I agree! The Horror! The Horror of Florence singing that song! But that was 1976. The show was taped early September at ABC Television. The show is now out on DVD. 10/2/07.

It's actually Roz Kelly (Pinky Tuscadero) singing "Disco Lady." Florence since "That Old Black Magic."

reply

Florence Henderson singing the disco version of "That old black magic" with KISS in the vicinity has got to be one of the most surreal moments in the history of televison. I wonder whatever happened to those neon bats.

reply

Yeah, I actually picked this up at Barnes and Noble yesterday and watched it last night. Florence Henderson singing was hilarious. In fact the only funny things in this special were things that weren't meant to be funny at the time. The comedy skits were awful and not funny at all. It's worth owning though just for it's rarity.

reply

Actually, they changed it to "Disco Baby", which was just a stupid change probably typical but it's a seventies TV special....you can't expect authenticity!

That disco verison of "Old Black Magic" by Carol Brady was insane. It wasn't good but it sounded like it could be a real record (was it?) more so than the songs where Lynde and others "sang".

reply

I doubt that it was a real record, but in the seventies anything was possible. Florence Henderson actually did have a pretty good voice. It was just the song itself that was embarassing.

I think they were asking if the song was issued as a single, and no, it wasn't.

Florence Henderson actually can sing, and did sing well immediately after the Paul Lynde special on "The Brady Bunch Variety Hour," which debuted that November (as well as a month earlier on "Donny & Marie"). The problem is she sometimes tries to sing operatically and beyond her vocal range. Clearly the music director on this show didn't reign her in, cuz her disco rendition of "That Old Black Magic" is an all-out assault.

reply

It is indeed a wretched rendition of "That Old Black Magic," and I absolutely loved every cringe-worthy note.

Holey seventies!

Florence Henderson had previously sung on screen in SONG OF NORWAY - www.imdb.com/title/tt0066393/

Neat!
