Did anyone else dislike Mona?

I loved this movie and was fascinated with Tamsin, but I just could not like Mona. Everything from the way she talked and looked and acted put me off. Did anyone else feel like this?

reply

a bit. i loved tamsin, i think mona was good but depended a bit too much on her. i know that was kinda the point but it did make me dislike her a bit.

I find both women stunningly beautiful and talented. Their performances are both exceptional, however Nathalie Press outshines Emily Blunt in my opinon. In addition to the Yorkshire accent she convincingly affects, much of Mona's acting is nonverbal and perhaps goes unnoticed and unappreciated. She has fewer, shorter lines than Tamsin and must rely more so on subtle facial expressions and gestures to develop her character. Emily Blunt plays a bored, spoiled rich girl. Although a few of her scenes are outstanding, such as her seduction of Mona's brother, this role is perhaps not particularly challenging for Blunt. She grew up in London, attended a top private boarding school, playing the cello and riding horseback. Not unlike Tamsin. Her role as the manipulative Emily in The Devil Wears Prada is similar as well. Just some food for thought.

Oh, come on! I would never comment on somebody not liking a certain character, but to say that the acting of Press was not good is just unbelieveable. I think this was one of the best performances ever by a young actress. And that's also what the critics say. Press has enormous talent and Pawlikowski got everything out of her when she played Mona. Her talking was brilliant as well. She did the Yorkshire dialect so well that it really seemed authentic. Her looks really captured Pawlikowski's camera and just dominated some of the dialogues.

By the Pawlikowski once said he identified with Mona to an "unhealthy degree".

I really enjoyed the character "Mona"...

reply

No, no, I LOVED Natalie's acting, but her character left me cold.

reply

For me it was actually the other way round - I identified far more with Mona than Tamsin. And I thought Natalie Press's performance was just fantastic.

Wow, that's not her real accent? She really did do an amazing job then, because i don't know anything about Natalie Press, and i asumed that was her real voice, thank god it's not! Thats has that same annoying quality that hick's accents have over her in america.

reply

Can't say I did. I watched the film because Emily Blunt was in it, but far preferred the character of Mona. Tamsin was a spoilt, manipulative girl acting out (who would be great fun to be around while she liked you), but Mona was more interesting all together. I was more curious about where Mona would go to next, than I was with Tamsin.

Both actresses were great though.

I felt pity for Mona. She comes from a broken home, a poor background and a broken relationship. She didn't only fell in love for Tamsin, she fell for her lifestyle too. She was used by her previous lover, and later by Tamsin who was very cruel for making Mona to believe she really care for her.

Sorry for my English, Spanish is my first Language

She was playing a northern English gal..and had a Yorkshire accent, working class. She was great as a new and upcoming actress and it is so hard to find redheads....was worth the watch!!!

reply

I didn't care for her at all. Tamsin was the most interesting character in the movie.

I guess I'm not the only one who likes better Tamsin's character than the Mona's one but I think that's the way she was supposed to be and in my opinion Natalie Press did an amazing job dipicting Mona the way she did.

reply

the thing i didn't find believable is what would tazmin see in mona, tazmin was too intellectual , attractive ,well spoken. its as though she had all her boxes ticked and mona was just that bit too common. That's the only real complaint i've got that i found it unrealistic that she'd fall for someone like that and she had the most aggrivating voice, not exactly sensual

reply

Yeah, i agree. Plus she had her hair on top on her head like a severely retarded child. I mean, who puts their hair up like that. I have never done that. I could not see what Tamsin saw in Mona on that first day.

reply

Since when do severally retarded children where their hair up.

If we forget religion, and just concentrate on acting human, something is going right.

reply

don't get me wrong, natalie press is an amazing actress, but i just found the character of tamsin far more exotic and intriuging, plus, as you might have guessed from my name, i'm a huge emily blunt fan!

'Jumping on top of her and shagging her like a man was so frightening'-Natalie Press on Emily Blunt

This comment seriously baffles me.

You heart me? What is that? Is that like I love you for pussies?

reply

Tamsin or whatever was pretty far from intellectual but quite pretentious she was. She talked like she knew a lot but many times she was wrong about the facts.

Not I. I liked the character of Mona. She grew in the tale. Tamsin used her to attempt to fill the void in her life - living in her sister's shadow - but may not have really learned anything. As the commentary says, I wanted to know what happens to Mona next. And I loved her accent - but not the top of head pony tail.

reply

I didn't like Mona at first because I was put off by the fact that she had a relationship with a married man but watching the film again I thought she was sweet and I felt sorry for her.

I don't think Tamsin would have had anything to do with Mona under normal circumstances, I think she was only drawn to Mona because there wasn't anyone else around.

reply

agree. i know tamsin could have done "better" even though I thought Mona was gorgeous but since tamsin was bored, she thought she could get something out of her and probably got more than she thought.

anyways, I think Mona's character was quite interesting. I thought she was funny sometimes and kind of clowned around sometimes. I really liked her occasional wittiness.

Tamsin was very interesting too but she came of as this bored girl who kinda just wanted to have fun with anyone who looked vulnerable.

I liked them both really so I dont know who to like more but meh.

No one knows what they are or where they've come from...
