I don't get all the hate.

Someone else asked this here:
"How is the ending good? If David is Charlie then how come Charlie pushed David's girlfriend out the window when David was downstairs?"

After reading that, I can only think that if you *really* hated this film, you probably didn't understand it. Exactly what happened with Vanilla Sky. It's one thing to not like a film, thinking it's not brilliant nor good, etc, but "the worst movie ever"? Come on now.

And to the posters saying all the ends are disappointing, what would be a good one? I guess if it was something easier like a ghost or the neighbor? lol

reply

I would have preferred ANYTHING but Charlie being David. What I hate about this movie (and a lot of others too) is just the cheap and easy way all film makers take lately: to put a twist and a lot of red herrings all over the place. That's not original, it has been used a thousand times before. It's like crying wolf. The trick gets old. There are good movies that have no twists at all.

reply

This is just me, but I thought the twist was really enjoyable in this film.

reply

The whole film was far too predictable for my liking. Entertaining enough, but my father and I were guessing the plot with 80% accuracy as it unfolded..

reply

It was gobsmackingly unoriginal, tbh - the plot was pretty much just Psycho meets The Shining. I get drawn into these films by DeNiro's presence time and time again :(

reply

other movies with similar endings

Psycho
Secret Window
High Tension

yes the ending is suprisingly UNORIGINAL
They also hyped the ending till no tomorrow.

reply

Okay, yes, unoriginal, but it being a ghost or the neighbor would have been even MORE predicatbale and unoriginal. I enjoyed it.... but then again I was tipped off about the ending so I don't really know if it was obvious from early on.

Basically meaning this movie was doomed to be rubbish from the start...

reply

but twists are good in films it makes you think eh?

reply

This is just me, but the film was one of the worst thrillers I've ever seen. Man, that twist was predictable.

reply

Hi All,

But what was the twist, did i miss anything, or do you find anything twisted.
I did not see any twist in the end.

SPOILERS

Ok, let me tell you my condition, in the begnning, when Robert De Niro sleeps and gets a snap of dream and wakes up, see his wife in the bath tub, i was sure this is something to do with Robert De Niro and his dream !!!. The reason, it is pretty simple, few days back i saw a movie called, Perfect stranger, where halle berry has some dreams, which cumiliates in the end and shows the killer.
So similiarly once i saw, Robert De Niro has some dreams, i sat to watch what was the dream about, and in the end i saw they reveal the dream.
I did not find any major difference between Perfect stranger and Hide and seek.
Both the moives have the dream which is reveals in the end and points to the killer.

Now where is the twist????

reply

We are not supposed to know David is Charlie...

reply

well i thought charlie was some sort of weird ghost or... "thing"... and for a while i even thought he was the guy who cheated on david with his wife, so the actual ending really surprised me since i didn't consider that possibility, so i thought it was good, but not as good as say "the sixth sense" where you gasp for air realizing the truth.

I don't get why people complain about it being predictable. Even if the twist was way out there and you'd never guess it in a million years, after watching it the first time it would lose all it's power. You need to look at the movie as a whole and not judge it just by the ending. The acting was brilliant and I loved the creepy music and settings. I was one of the people that guessed the twist before the end, but I still found the many other elements of the movie rather enjoyable.

I really liked this movie. Like dark-gardenia said, the acting was excellent and it was creepy. Plus I did not guess the ending so was surprised.

This is 100 times better than, say, "Laid to Rest" which has terrible acting, no story, and really is a horrid movie in every possible way.

I've already seen the worst movie ever made, so it can only be uphill from there.

reply

I agree, there are many worse movies out there that people could be complaining about. And even if there wasn't, why bother taking the time out of your day to go online to a forum specifically for a movie that you didn't like just to complain about it? It seems like an awful lot of bother when you could just as easily... turn the movie off and go watch something else.

Imo hate should be saved for things that actually deserve it. Applying the emotion to something like a movie is pretty stupid. A movie is never going to entertain every single person in the entire world so it's safe to assume that in your lifetime you'll see something that you don't find enjoyable. But to actually HATE it? That's going a little too far.

I agree with two points throughout this thread;

1 - the split personality ending has been done before (though each is its own depiction and i usually enjoy seeing the concept)

2 - You shouldnt hate or write off a WHOLE film because you guessed the ending and its been done before - it doesnt mean anything - im bored to tears by most crime action dramas - most of them end the same - but i just accept that i dont like them.

MOST importantly, EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT AND HAS SEEN DIFFERENT FILMS!!!

Some people on here may not have seen that many split personality endings, some might be 14 years old and only seen 20 films!, some might have only just gotten into their psych films!(and so enjoy it/suprised/dont guess it)

Sixth sense was 10 years ago - i was 15 - i didnt see it coming OK?! So what?! 10 years on more with this ending have been made, I am more mature and have seen way more films.

What annoys me is NOT if people hate it, but if they think theyre BETTER than other people because they guessed an ending that someone else didnt and make out that that makes the other person stupid/the film bad. Even more so when they spend time on here complaining about it. Get over it! Blockbuster film makers do it every day.

Some people like films tht others dont. Its the beauty of being a unique being and it doesnt bother me at all, in fact i wouldnt want it any other way <3

What annoyed me more than anything is that it ended suddenly and he died, poor guy.

reply

@lucy u2 - Some people just don't get it. He had split personality, he wasn't david when she came, he wasn't even downstairs otherwise she would have seen him or he would have heard her. He killed her as Charlie, moved the body and return to become David.

the cop/realtor is a combo you don’t see everyday.

It was a good solid movie with the same in performances all around. Nothing incredible, but hardly anything not worth watching and enjoyable either. 8/10

reply

I wonder what or why he would change into Charlie, what would bring on the other personality and how long would it last, like the ending, he stayed Charlie until he was shot. Was he now Charlie all the time or what?

I don't think the ending was that predictable -- and I figured out both "6th Sense" and "Usual Suspects" halfway through.

The reason this wasn't easy was because fanning was an effective red-herring -- we reasonably suspect she is actually the killer. And they show DeNiro away from the crime scenes -- although this turns out to be fantasy later.

All in all, a decent, satisfying film. I love good twist films.

reply

I love this movie. I don't get the hate either. I mean ok, not everyone has the same taste, but come on, it's not a terrible movie.

"Couldn't care less" = "don't care at all"
"Could care less" = "care at least a little"

reply

The movie was okay. 5/6 out of 10 stars. If you've watched enough movies in your life you'll likely be able to figure out where the movie is heading, but if you've watched a LOT of movies in your life you'll likely figure out where most every movie is heading. My enjoyment doesn't rise and fall with novel plot twists. I enjoyed it because I like De Niro a lot, even in his newer movies, and think Dakota Fanning is one of the better child actors of the last couple of decades.

This movie came in that era when ghost and supernatural movies were still a thing. I was genuinely surprised that the reveal was something that made sense and not a ghost or something.
