Wear a brown wig ?

Why couldn't she just be a blond in the film ?
although she does look rather cute as a brunette

Did the brunette symbolise anything ?

Maybe it was meant to be :)

I think she would have looked even cuter being blond. She was supposed to have a kinda weary, sometimes even suspicious look, I guess. IMO the brunette wig worked well for that purpose.

The reason that the wee lassie herself gave - in the publicity interviewes - was that the public knew her as a blond from her previous films, so she was given a wig to make her look different.

My opinion (which has nothing to do with the facts of the case) is thus: darker hair for a darker character in a darker movie.

You seriously don't see why?

It's a dark character.

So dark hair.
