James Marsden's secret?

What is Marsden's secret in the film? Is he in the closet?

reply

He had a sled with the logo "Rosebud" painted on it when he was a child.

What the *#%^ does that mean? Don't worry, I answered my own question. Marsden appeared on the cover of Advocate magazine and talked about the secret his character is keeping. SPOILER: He's having an affair with Jesse Bradford's character.

so *beep* hot!!!!!

reply

Someone obviously hasn't seen Citizen Kane...

That spoiler makes me look forward to the movie even more now.

I saw the film tonight (great, btw) and I had a question: Was Jonathan supposed to be gay or bisexual?

Because he was supposedly in love with Benjamin and Alec, yet he said that he really loved Isabel.

On the Kinsey scale, Jonathan seems more like a 4 than a 5.

I got the impression that Jonathan was in love with the idea of loving a woman, not the actual woman. Remember the scene where Alec asked Jonathan if what he and Isabel had was real, and Jonathan responded, "It's close enough." I think he was trying to prove something to himself. The two behaved more like best friends in the film. The only time they were sexually intimate was when Isabel put on Alec's jacket.

"he's gay, but he's not gay"

"I'm fat, but I'm not fat."

reply

*snooooooooooorts*

Yeah, I'd say he's... "fat".

I used to have a , but damnit do I want a !

reply

That's because of the jacket. Jonathan saw, or though about, Alec, no Isabel.
Well, it's my free interpretation of the scene after knowing what was going on.

reply

Agreed.
And I think that Isabel is mostly turned on by the thought that Jonathan can be so jealous regarding her putting on another man's jacket. After all, when it comes to Mark, her ex, it's clear that Jonathan doesn't like the guy, but he's never really jealous about it, he doesn't show much emotion in that respect.

Wow, SupremeCourt3, that was a very good observation that Jonathan was only sexually intimate with Isabel when she had Alec's jacket on. I missed that one! Thanks for pointing that out!

So when did YOU see it?

reply

Well, there are those people who actually read for their own education that might have known about it before the movie, but I understand how such things might be a mystery to you.

reply

Yeah, well, some of us have actually read Kinsey (directly, not merely about him) and found his scale wanting. In truth, people come in homo or hetero. The "sprectrum" that fascinates simple minds applies to electromagnetic frequencies and somewhat to skin pigment but not to sexual object choice. Kinsey's 1s thru 5s simply had more or less overlapping closet/coming out periods or spent a greater or lesser time in prison.

I'm not surprised to see Hollywood pushing the Kinsey fiction in yet another film. After all, they have a lot of adoring female fans' fantasies of Tom Cruise et al to protect. Ka-ching!

reply

I do not believe that people are strictly hetero or homo. Those extremes are societal constructs born out of people needing to place themselves and others into neatly wrapped and labeled boxes. Homo/hetero - that's the fiction.

Obviously there was something between Jonathan and Isabel - it wasn't enough for Jonathan, but it was "close enough". Perhaps many of us just aren't meant for monogamy.

I don't think the Jonathan/Isabel relationship or the Jonathan/Alec relationship would have survived the reveal. Both relationships were based on a lie, and that may have been the attraction for Jonathan with both Alec and Isabel.

-------

"I love you. I love everything about you that hurts."

reply

Oh, I don't think his relationship with Alec was based on a lie. After all, Alec did know about Isabel, though the opposite was not true. The problem there was of a different kind, and we won't know whether Jonathan will manage to work it out. But the movie at least suggests that he will, because he wanted to start over, to make things right with Alec.

And I love your sig quote. Where is it from?

reply

I think people are all 1-5 and that 0 and 6 are simply the way most people prefer to be thought of, because sexuality is complicated and because sometimes, even with yourself, one can't be completely honest. And because sometimes you can be a 1 or a 5, but that little bit of attraction to the sex you're not dominantly attracted to simply isn't enough of a reason to come into play and complicate matters for you.

Um... Actually, that's one of the more brilliant ideas out there, I think, and I've learnt about it when I was 12 years old. I went to see the movie because of that, if anything...

I used to have a , but damnit do I want a !

Does it matter? The person he's in love with is Alec. Even though I'm sure he does love Isabel, what he has with her isn't enough to keep him away from an affair, or from kissing Alec passionately, even as he knows she's waiting for him downstairs, even as he's saying that he'll stay with her because what they have is good (though not real).

So I'd say gay, in that sense.
